Great book on materials
By Ahmed Harrison
So far I love this book. I am currently taking a heavy construction methods class. This book is also being used for light construction(residential) class at my institution as well.

I am about half way through the course so I have not read the whole book. But so far, it's an easy read with lots of info. I love the side bars. They contain additional information about subject being discussed in that particular section. The questions at the end of each chapter are some what challenging. They are in sequential order so you don't have to look all over the chapter to find the answers. I have had books that quiz you on info that even isn't in the material being covered in that particular chapter. Some may think I am being silly but I believe one should be challenged to learn the material not be tested on how effectively you can comb through hundreds of pages. There is a ton of info in this text.

I also like the fact that it discusses sustainable construction in every chapter. In each section it explains how the material being discussed in the chapter pertains to sustainable practices. Being a LEED AP(US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), I believe it is extremely important that today's construction professionals embrace and fully understand sustainability as it pertains to construction. So called "green building" is quickly becoming a standard practice in the US and throughout the developed world.

This is a great text book. I definitely plan on keeping it for reference material as I continue my career.I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning the basics about construction materials and methods.

Excellent textbook...frustrating for Kindle
By JDub
As a student studying Construction Management, I found this to be a terrific textbook. The diagrams and picture explanations I found to be very helpful, and there is a plethora of helpful information.

My one complaint has nothing to do with the content of the book however. My biggest frustration with this textbook had to do with the kindle experience. First of all, this did work fine on my Kindle HD, albeit with a small screen, it was difficult to pan around a large textbook page. My options for viewing it on a computer were limited because it cannot be viewed on the kindle cloud reader for viewing on web browser and it is not available for viewing on kindle for windows 8. So if you have a new laptop or computer and want to view the content on a bigger screen than a kindle you are out of luck. That needs to change. Please allow me to read this on a windows 8 device.

Not far from the newest release(2014)
By Robert G. Brady
Does a pretty good job at keeping up with the new book that came out. I'm in a class that uses the newest version of this book and with a few new illustrations and color images, there isn't much difference.

When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America, by Ira Katznelson

A groundbreaking work that exposes the twisted origins of affirmative action.

In this "penetrating new analysis" (New York Times Book Review) Ira Katznelson fundamentally recasts our understanding of twentieth-century American history and demonstrates that all the key programs passed during the New Deal and Fair Deal era of the 1930s and 1940s were created in a deeply discriminatory manner. Through mechanisms designed by Southern Democrats that specifically excluded maids and farm workers, the gap between blacks and whites actually widened despite postwar prosperity. In the words of noted historian Eric Foner, "Katznelson's incisive book should change the terms of debate about affirmative action, and about the last seventy years of American history."

From Publishers Weekly
Rather than seeing affirmative action developing out of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Katznelson (Desolation and Enlightenment) finds its origins in the New Deal policies of the 1930s and 1940s. And instead of seeing it as a leg up for minorities, Katznelson argues that the prehistory of affirmative action was supported by Southern Democrats who were actually devoted to preserving a strict racial hierarchy, and that the resulting legislation was explicitly designed for the majority: its policies made certain, he argues, that whites received the full benefit of rising prosperity while blacks were deliberately left out. Katznelson supports this startling claim ingeniously, showing, for instance, that while the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act was a great boon for factory workers, it did nothing for maids and agricultural laborers—employment sectors dominated by blacks at the time—at the behest of Southern politicians. Similarly, Katznelson makes a strong case that the GI Bill, an ostensibly color-blind initiative, unfairly privileged white veterans by turning benefits administration over to local governments, thereby ensuring that Southern blacks would find it nearly impossible to participate. This intriguing study closes with suggestions for rectifying racial inequality, but its strongest merit is its subtle recalibration of a crucial piece of American history. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Katznelson places into contemporary context the cause of racial inequity that is directly related to government policies, which are widely believed to benefit blacks but which have actually benefited whites. He eschews the more generalist focus on slavery and white supremacy as the causes of racial inequality and focuses on government policies of the New Deal and post-World War II distribution of veteran benefits. He identifies in a practical sense government policies, most of which appear neutral on their face, that were designed to restrict blacks and, in fact, impeded them from progressing commensurate with white America. The war economy and labor needs expanded opportunities for blacks and substantially reduced economic disparities. But postwar policies to promote home ownership and labor laws regarding minimum wages deliberately excluded blacks. Other policies providing the engine that produced today's middle class, including the GI benefits that financed college education, reinforced the discriminatory patterns. By connecting the dots, Katznelson provides the foundational basis that justified affirmative action for blacks, as the disparities are an outgrowth of government policies and practices. Vernon Ford

If Injustice Angers You, Read in Small Doses.
By Bear
Spells out the history of how the welfare and housing laws of the 1930's-1950's were skewed to exclude minorities. Uses historical records to back up how the original benefits of welfare and home ownership were denied to minorities, under the cloak of legality. Also has some interesting history around the Southern Democratic party, and when the stalwart members of that party switched to the Republican party when the Democratic party as a whole started to embrace the minority voter. If you are easily angered by injustice, you'll want to read this in small doses. I found it very instructional, particularly in light of the current political climate. A good reminder that early affirmative action denied minorities much of the American Dream.

Before It Was Called Affirmative Action
By AlanWarner
Americans especially white Americans benefitted from two federal sponsored programs designed to help them move into the middle class these programs were the Social Security Act of 1935 and The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 nicknamed The G I Bill of Rights the amazing thing about the Social Security Act is that it intentionally excluded domestic workers and farm workers as stated on page 43 "Unfortunately, the great majority of blacks were left out. Most African Americans, we have seen, were farm workers or domestics, and people in these categories did not qualify." "Not until 1954, when Republicans controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, and the southern Democrats finally lost their ability to mold legislation, were the occupational exclusions that had kept the large majority of blacks out of the Social Security system eliminated." As for The G I Bill even though this was a federal program the administrative duties and distribution of funds was handled and left up to the individual states on page 114 "To be sure, the G I Bill did create a more middle-class society, but almost exclusively for whites.Written under southern auspices, the law was deliberately designed to accommodate Jim Crow. Its administration widened the country's racial gap. The prevailing experience for blacks was starkly differential treatment." An individual example of this differential treatment can be found on page 139 read "The case of Reuben Thompson of Rome, Georgia," And on page 140 "these impediments were not confined to the South. In New York and northern New Jersey suburbs, fewer than 100 of the 67,000 mortgages insured by the G I Bill supported home purchases by non-whites". This is a perfect example of how white people were able to advance into middle-class status, the material in this book is a major part of American history.

Required reading for Americans
By stpaul2010
Incredibly eye-opening. People talk about black history and institutional racism, but all you hear about is the most blatant racism and slavery. This book describes the stuff that's truly important today: how blacks were systematically denied a decent livelihood and.progress from generation to generation. Not just in blatant ways, but in countless little ways. The end result is the poor black nation living within an otherwise wealthy nation. This material should be in every high school course in American history.

Fantastic book with every Marvel character you can imagine!
By Mags
This is a fantastic book and was a huge hit with my 8 year old son. He LOVES it! He has another character collection book (Marvel the Avengers - The Ultimate Character Guide) that is tiny in comparison. I'm not a Marvel expert by any stretch of the imagination but I can't imagine any characters that aren’t in here. It has everything...heroes, villians, groups of heroes, groups of villians, “ages” (i.e. Age of Ultron).

For each character, there is an information box that they call a “Factfile”. In the Factfile, they have the characters “real” name (think Peter Parker for Spiderman), their occupation, the location of their base, height, weight, eye color, powers, allies, foes and when they first appeared in the Marvel Comics (Comic name and year) Here is a tiny sampling of what is in the book: A-Bomb, Abomination, Abraxas, Absalon, Absorbing Man, Abyss, Achilles, Acolytes, Action Pack, Acts of Vengeance, Adam-2, Adversary, Aegis, Aero, Aftershock, Agamemnon, Agency X, Agent Axis, Agents of Atlas, Agent X, Agent Zero, Age of Apocalypse, Age of Ultron, Age of X, Agony, Ahab, AIM, Air-Walker, Ajak, Ajax, Albion, Alephs, Aleta, Liz Allan, Alliance of Evil, All-Winners Squad, Alpha, Alpha Flight, Alpha-Stone, Marlene Alraune, Alter Ego, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Amazons, American Dream, American Eagle, Amphibian, Anachronauts, Anaconda, Anarchist, Ancient One, Andromeda, A-Next, Angar, Angel, Angela, Dirk Anger...and that is just 1/4 of the A’s! It is crazy!

For some of the minor characters, there are multiple characters on one page. There is more space dedicated to the major characters. Spiderman, for example, has 4 pages dedicated to him. One of the pictures attached to this review shows one of the pages as an example.

The characters are all in alphabetical order so between that and a very detailed index (there is a picture attached of one page of the index as an example), it is really easy to find specific characters. If you have a question about whether a specific character is in the book, you can comment below and I will look for you.

If nothing else, the book would make a great weapon. It is huge! It is 439 pages

Happy Marvel-ing!

Awesome book

I received the book the very next afternoon. A need for any Marvel comic book lover. Vast amounts of background stories on the favorites. They have updated some of the pictures and added more to the stories. Even if you own the old Encyclopedia this is a must have

If you're an amateur comic book enthusiast like me then this book is great
By Mike S
If you're an amateur comic book enthusiast like me then this book is great. It covers quite a few characters and events in the Marvel Universe and the entries vary in length depending on their popularity. This ends up being one of the book's drawbacks too since in the years after the book's publication various characters have gained in popularity yet the book may only contain a brief description for them due to their relative obscurity at the time (Deadpool for example).

Despite its rapid obsolescence and the numerous editing errors which other reviewers have already pointed out, this character encyclopedia is a wonderful coffee table book that will spark conversations and occupy guests for hours. True fanatics may find the book lacking, but it's not meant to be exhaustive. It's a quick-reference conversational piece, and for the beginner or amateur comic book fan a handy educational tool. It's certainly worthy of a place on the living room end table beside the AD&D Monster Manual

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-This series explores the various ways, both positive and negative, in which cell phones affect society and shape our modern lives and interactions with others. Readers will be drawn in by real-life examples and text boxes with supplemental information and quotes. Research is cited, but some statements that are presented as fact are not always supported. Although there is discussion about how children and teens are influenced by cell phones, particularly in Cell Phones and Teens, these are definitely aimed at high school readers. The large blocks of unbroken text and small type may be overwhelming to reluctant readers. Suitable choices.α(c) Copyright 2014. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
