The chapter addresses in detail the articulation of particular provisions, including definitions, termination and exculpatory provisions. Its comprehensive discussion of how to recognize and avoid various types of ambiguity will prove useful beyond the contract drafting context. The legislation chapter identifies common legislative protocols and applies, within those protocols, many of the organization and articulation principles set out in the contracts chapter. While the text uses litigation documents, contracts and legislation as the bases for its discussions, Basic Legal Drafting offers practical, realistic advice and instructions that will be useful to the drafter of any type of legal document.

About the Author
From 1986 until 2011 Professor Rutledge, B.S, M.Ed., M.C.R.P., J.D., taught Legal Drafting at the University of Florida College of Law where she became Director of the Legal Drafting Program in 1993. Throughout her years of service, Professor Rutledge, with the help of her colleagues, continued to develop and refine the materials and methods used in the Program. A graduate of Rutgers School of Law, Professor Rutledge served as judicial clerk in the Superior Court of New Jersey and practiced law in that state for several years before beginning her teaching career.

Ultimate "How To" Book

"Basic Legal Drafting" is the ultimate "How To" book for anyone faced with the task of drafting a legal document. It answers all questions as to "What Do I Say and How Do I Say It." The text leads the reader step by step through the drafting process: how to think about the context of the document, how to determine the necessary content of the document, how to place the content into a logical framework, and how to use language skills to set out the content clearly and without ambiguity.
The faculty members of the Legal Drafting Program at the University of Florida Levin College of Law have used the book for six semesters, and it is by far the best teaching tool we have encountered. Because the text covers all of the basics of effective drafting, students are better prepared when they come to class, and the discussion is more informed. Many questions can be answered simply by reference to specific pages of the text. Comments by students have been highly positive. They find the book to be "thorough", "readable", and "most helpful", and indicate it is the one book they intend to keep after graduation because it is the "most useful."
The text is useful not only for the classroom, but also as a primer for law school graduates who have not had the benefit of a hands-on skills course such as Legal Drafting. It is also useful as a reference for even seasoned attorneys facing particular drafting dilemmas. "Basic Legal Drafting" is practical and to the point, and entirely user-friendly.

Great Textbook

As a law school legal drafting instructor and former practitioner, I find this textbood invaluable. Professor Rutledge's easy-to-read compilation of more than 20 years of lessons taught and learned captures the essentials of drafting clear, unambiguous, and well-organized documents. Each drafting principle is presented with a thorough explanation and helpful examples that provide excellent starting points for my students' weekly drafting assignments. I have more time in class to focus on the students' work products and I spend less class time on general explantions. Not only is the substance outstanding, the writing style is delightful and makes you feel as though you are in a very pleasant classroom environment. There is nothing dry or boring about this text, and my students actually give positive feedback about it! A reference students should take with them into the practice, I highly recommend it for instructors, students, and practitioners.

Very well organized. Elements are explained very carefully. An excellent resource, and for non-lawyers, an essential resource. One complaint: a little hard to find some of the important points made in the body of the text. It could be improved with more subdivisions.

Rivkin (Connecticut Coll.) and Ryan (Northeastern Univ.) have designed this anthology for courses in literary theory at the graduate or at best advanced undergraduate level. Its title suggests a much more comprehensive scope than is in fact the case. There is no Aristotle here, no Sir Phillip Sidney, no Matthew Arnold. Instead, this anthology aims to include only contemporary literary theory, which means that the earliest pieces date back only to the 1920s, and many of the essays were written within the past decade. Attempting to include texts that are not commonly available, it also embraces the "heterodox and newly canonical" to provide students with a broad range of current viewpoints. The 100-plus essays and essay excerpts are grouped into ten categories, such as "Marxism," "Feminism," and "Gender Studies," with most of the introductory essays in each section written by the editors themselves. There is also a fine index. Despite a multiplicity of such anthologies, this one seems to live up to its claim that it is the most comprehensive one available. Almost incomparably superior to other anthologies

With all apologies to Alan Lopez, I have never seen a better anthology of literary theory. I am a college faculty member, one who teaches primarily first-year students. I use literary theory in both literature and writing classes, and there is just no other book with the range of selections in this one, and no other book with such sensible, helpful introductions. Certainly there is jargon, in both the selections and in the introductions, but to simplify the texts any more would be to replace reading them with reading "Foucault for Beginners." "Foucault for Beginners" is a fun book, and even useful, but it is not an anthology of primary theory texts. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough to people who want to have selections of a workable length (neither too long to swamp you, nor too short to be unrepresentative of the original authors' projects). If you are thinking about buying this book, that means you are interested in theory. If you are interested in theory, buy this book. If you teach theory, order this book. My only hesitation about requiring this for undergraduates is the price, which is a little hefty unless you are going to be sure to use a decent size chunk of the text.

Good Introduction to Literary Theory

I found Rivkin's anthology to be comprehensive in terms of the variety of schools of thought covered. I bought it for a class, and my single complaint about the book and the class is the same: I feel that I'm not getting a full and comprehensive understanding of each individual theorist's work. But I suppose if I were a more dedicated scholar, I'd just read each theorist's complete works on my own instead of buying an introduction to critical theory. So, if you would like a deep understanding of a few individual theorists, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking to get an overview with many important details of the recent history (i.e. the last 100 years) of critical theory, I would highly recommend this book.

Cute book, not for children under 4!

My kids (3 under the age of 3) LOVE Gnomeo & Juliet the movie. I figured I'd get them this book...well it lasted a couple of hours. It's a very cute book, but not for kids under 4 years old. I wish it came with more stickers too. It is a bit pricey too!

Among US ethical critics invited to review work by others than themselves, it was agreed that books should only be considered for their success or weaknesses within the intentions of the author.

In many respects the 2nd edition is a considerable advance over the scope and "maturity" of its predecessor. Within my knowledge the 2nd edition deserves to be the foundation of further international progress in the subject areas.

This book is an encyclopedia of knowledge, well-written and well-organized. I highly recommend it for all people interested in the behavior of dogs and some of their wild relatives. While "academic" in some ways, this books is also readable for people who are not members of the ivory tower community. Each time I go to it I'm amazed by its breadth and the care with which Dr. Miklosi covers numerous diverse topics. All in all, simply outstanding.

Could Be Quite Useful For Understanding Social Cues, But Seems Almost the Same As a Typical Collection of Colloquialisms

I didn't really expect that the dictionaries for people with Asperger Syndrome(AS) would be published. But I don't believe the dictionary will guarantee 100% to catch the social lives of people with AS. Of course, I do see the author's intention; to help Aspies(people with Asperger Syndrome) cope more smoothly with their society. The stars which indicated social manner(1 star:unlikely to offend, 2stars:may offend, 3 stars:will always offend) is sure to help Aspies know the social convention better. Without knowing them, it can lead to a real disaster. I know it can be quite useful to remember the idiomatic and pragmatic expressions shown in this dictionary when it comes to making conversations more lively. It does satisfy English-speaking adults with AS, but falls short of the details, I suppose.

After all, I could have given 5 stars to this book with more specific examples. For Non-native speakers of English with AS, it might be better to deal with What Did You Say? What Do You Mean?: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding Metaphors written by Jude Welton.

A Book That Might Put NT Translators Out of Business

For many people with autism and its related condition, Asperger's Syndrome, metaphors and other "vague" expressions are interpreted at the literal level. In many instances, people on the a/A spectrum have difficulty in understanding metaphors and certain idiomatic expressions.

I like the way Anglo, American and Australian expressions are included. While the suggestion of separating each set of idiomatic phrases and metaphors by country is a good one, that is not to overlook the validity and need for this book. Even if one's child or anyone else on the a/A spectrum uses phrases from other countries, it speaks to inclusion and cultural awareness. I think that speaks to having goals for those who would most benefit from this work and it also is a fascinating look at idioms. It just might make the work of neurotypical (NT) translators lighter; people on the spectrum can consult this book for some of the more ambiguous-sounding expressions.

I recommend "What Did You Say? What Do You Mean?: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding Metaphors" by Welton, et al. and feel the Welton book does a much more thorough job of clarifying idioms and metaphors.

All in all, a solid work.

Not just for Asperger sufferers is this dictionary of everyday expressions, a reference tool which has been revised and expanded to include some 5000 expressions to reveal the meaning of everyday idiomatic expressions. People with Asperger Syndrome have difficulties with social communication: here entries are clearly explained, cover British and American English alike, and clarifies phrases commonly used - and confused - in social situations. Any library will find it an excellent language reference.

Some time ago I started to get into programming computers. There are books that teach programming languages. There are others that simply tell you what the commands are. They don't teach you how to program, but you can use the information to make your programs work. In a sense, programming books don't teach programming.
In a similar way, Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs doesn't teach you how to do spells (although it does give a brief outline so you can use this without any other book). What it does do is give you all the information you need to make your spells, talismans, amulets, and rituals work better.
This book has become a classic in its field. Every time I visit an occult shop that sells herbs, I look to see what books they use as resources. Inevitably, this book is there, usually quite beaten up from constant use. The pros use it and so do over 200,000 people like you.
The cross-referenced index of folk names could be a book by itself. Did you know that if a magical spell calls for "bats' wings" you should use holly? Or did you know that if a magical recipe called for "lapstones" you should use potato? If you had this book you would know all that and more. You'd also learn that ragweed can be used for courage; lily of the valley can enhance mental powers and happiness; and chrysanthemums can be used for protection.
This book by Scott Cunningham is truly encyclopedic. It gives information on over 400 herbs in an easy-to-use format that makes working with the book clear and simple. If you do any sort of magic with herbs, or if you are interested in folklore, this is a book you must have.

About the Author
Scott Cunningham practiced magic actively for over twenty years. He was the author of more than fifty books covering both fiction and non-fiction subject matter; sixteen of his titles are published by Llewellyn Publications. Scott's books reflect a broad range of interests within the New Age sphere, where he was very highly regarded. He passed from this life on March 28, 1993, after a long illness.

I was first acquainted with this book when it first ...

I was first acquainted with this book when it first came out decades ago. As with any book of it's type, it is a reference, not a spell book. It gives you the historical lore, planetary rulers, male/female, etc. What you do with the book is match it up with other references so that you get a full depth as to what the herb will do. It was never meant to be an indepth volume spilling every secret of the plant out. This is where study and research are involved. Anyone that has been involved with the study of the occult knows that not everything is always spelled out. That is what makes the difference between the novice who gets in over their head and can hurt themselves with the information, and the adept who realizes that time and effort and experience is required to obtain the desired results. If you're willing to dig and study, you will find this book a true gem.

PERFECT!!

I've recently came to the conclusion that I am a natural born witch. However, I had no idea where to start. Googling only directed me to shady "spell" sites but I wanted to learn more. I wanted to understand how to cast a spell and wanted a guide that helped me from the beginning. Well, this book is it. I learned how to make a satchet and learned which planets were associated with what herbs and much more. This book is perfect for a complete newbie. For experienced witches this might be a bit boring, but it doesn't hurt to have since it has info on hundreds of herbs. It's a nice book to have. I love it!!! 5 stars for sure.

Definitely no angel.

Although mentioned before by quite a few reviewers, Tom Bower's technical grasp is virtually non-existent and which is a wicked shame. He obviously had no intention in letting any technically minded proofreader, loose on his manuscript. There are countless mistakes relating to people and their roles within the sport. These are unforgivable indeed. McLaren's Alistair Cauldwell was never a draftsman for Brabham, but was McLaren's chief mechanic/crew chief until his retirement from the sport.
Susan Watkins' earlier - and 'approved' bio - "Bernie", is the opposite to Bower's 'non-approved' rendition - but it was orchestrated like that for a good reason. Bernie encouraged Bower to 'air' much official and unofficial dirty stuff, only to slyly refer to the 'unofficial' status of Bower's book, should he be challenged.
A brilliant move if you wish to underline anything negative that had been rumored for decades, and to sanitize it through an unofficial biography.
I wonder how many readers simply have no grasp of Bernie's powerful reach within society as a whole. Bernie says of himself that he is a good friend - but a bad enemy.
I, for one, would not be willing to discover the measure of his abject disappointment.

So secret, I made it up !!!,,

This book is a shocker !! I suspect Mr Bower doesn't have the faintest idea what actually happens in F1. This book has so many factual errors it becomes quite amusing to keep score. Events happen before things were even made, people who weren't even at certain races influenced the outcome, drivers that we didn't realise were world champions (Carlos Reutemann), overall a complete waste of paper. Probably the worst aspect of this book, is that there is a fascinating story to be told, but his isn't it. Save your money, if you have something better to do that just throw it away, buy the "Bernie" book, it's more factual, not the whole story sadly, but at least what is says is generally correct.
