About the Author
Kate Chenery Tweedy learned to ride at The Meadow as a child and later joined the family at races in New York and Saratoga Springs. At age twenty, she was in the eye of the whirlwind surrounding Secretariat and experienced his historic Triple Crown win at her mother s side at Belmont. She has accompanied her mother, the first lady of racing, in her travels across the country to keep Secretariat s legacy alive. Kate, an erstwhile lawyer, now teacher, editor, author and family historian, spent three years researching to do justice to the story of her remarkable grandfather and mother whose horses brought the national attention to that timeless place, The Meadow. She and her husband Jerry live in Littleton, Colorado. Her two grown daughters are educators and writers as well.

Leeanne Meadows Ladin also learned to ride at her grandparents farm in Virginia, racing pinto ponies on red clay fields by the Blackwater River with her cousins. She is the author of four books of regional historical interest, including the award-winning The State Fair of Virginia More Than A Midway, which featured a chapter on The Meadow. She and her husband Gary live in Richmond, Virginia.

More Than Just a Horse, More Than Just a Horse Story

This wonderful book brings to life all the people who made The Meadow Stable such a prominent figure in Thoroughbred racing, from Christopher T. Cherney's dream to his grand-daughter's, Penny Cherney's dream horse, Secretariat.

This is no one note history of an East Coast Horse Country family, so much more than a simple regional history. It is a tribute to the land, the beginning of a breeding/racing empire and the extended family who made it all possible, a rare trifecta of fate. Such a book could only be accomplished by an author who has intimate knowledge of such details, Penny Cherney's daughter, Kate Cherney Tweedy, is one of the authors. She is joined by Leanne Meadows and noted Virginia photographer, Wayne Dementi. The story, photographs and acknowledgement of so many people who make up a successful racing operation endears these three to my heart.

A horse-crazed teenage girl, I was glued to Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes every year, hoping to witness such a winner. I can remember in vivid detail Secretariat's ascent to Triple Crown glory and into my heart where he will live forever. Other college girls had their rooms plastered with posters of the Pop stars, mine were newspaper clippings and photos of the greatest thoroughbred of my generation. His effect has not lessened some 30 years later, tears still run down my face whenever I see a film clip of "Big Red" on the racetrack. I know I will never see anything like Secretariat again in my life.

This Autumn there is to be a film released about Secretariat starring Diane Lane as Penny Cherney, the "First Lady of Racing". Three horses are making up his role, I am surprised it did not entail more. This book comes at the crucial time to heighten interest in him again and then there are those of us who have already purchased a box of tissues and tickets for the local primere.

The Hearts of the Meadow

This book seems to pick up where Raymond Wolfe's 2001 edition of 'Secretariat' left off. In the footnote at the end of that work Raymond updated the readers on the condition of the Meadow in 1998, with Ross Sternhiemer's purchase of the estate. 'Secretariat's Meadow' begins there and takes us back into the history of the land and its people, the players and circumstances that generated the spirit of determination that would eventually give to America if not its greatest then certainly one of its most gifted Thoroughbred performers. A brief synopsis of this piece might look like this: with beginnings dating back to the early 1700s, the land rooted in plantations and slave ownership, we are led through ante and postbellum periods with regard to specific families, characters , social conditions, and geography. At the core is one clan, the Morris family, headed by a physician who acquired the acreage from wealthy landowners. The Meadow remained with the family for more than a century when in the clutches of the devastation and poverty the civil war left behind, the land was sold. The war filtered out the strong from the weak, and James Chennery and wife Ida, relations who resided at the Meadow for a time, were determined to survive the aftermath. Moving to Richmond and then to Ashland, their future lied with the education of their children. All their sons and daughters succeeded in their own respective professions, journalism, medicine, and engineering, the latter ascribed to the ambitious and creative Christopher who would eventually return the Meadow to the family. Developing a passion for horses and horse racing in particular, young Christopher set out to accomplish his most pressing need, to secure his finances. Years later, after co-founding a successful utilities operation in New York and establishing financial independence, he was then in position to pursue his passion, to purchase and return the Meadow to its family roots and install a Thoroughbred breedership upon it. The rest is history. The story of Secretariat is one of the determination bred long before into the land and blood of the Meadow, into the hearts of a people who were determined to survive the devastation of war, and into the souls of a handful of Virginians who longed to return the land to the best parts of its past. I sense this story will be told and re-told according to differing views by later generations, perhaps a work that chronicles all of American racing and its roots in aristocratic circles of which Virginia with its Bullfield and Meadow is at the epicenter. Whatever the piece, the Meadow with its people and horses offers fertile ground for choice. In his work 'The Horse God Built', Lawrence Scanlan tells of a young woman he met working at the Meadow who used to hear a galloping horse on its track at 3 am on certain days. Others heard it as well. The spooky sound left Whitney Jones believing it was the spirit of Secretariat breezing through his birth place, continuing to live the dreams of all his connections and predecessors. She recalled another incident when opening a gate, she had the experience of something powerful running through her. The Meadow's pride for its finest sons and daughters, both human and non-human, has been carved deep into the bone of its land and people.

This is a wonderfully written and researched account of a segment of American history. The only suggestion offered is for the inclusion of an appendix detailing the historical events of The Meadow in a chronological manner. This can provide a quick reference tool for readers.

More about the family tree than a racehorsing legend....

The book is beautiful, and contains a lot of family information and photos, and beautiful layouts. However, the title and cover is rather misleading. The book reads more like a geneology book rather than a book about a racehorsing legend. When I received the book I immediately sat down and started thumbing through it. I had assumed that the book (because of the title and picture of Secretariat on the cover)would be filled with pictures of Secretariat amongst some information about where he came from and the family. When I reached the portion about Secretariat, it was at the back of the book and only a few pages had anything to do with Secretariat. After I spent time pondering the book, I thought to myself that even though the author is related and had a personal interest in telling the story, I felt as though she was using Secretariat's popularity to sell copies. If you're looking for a book on Secretariat with great pictures, and history of the racehorse, this may not be the book for you. Now a coffee table book just about Secretariat would be definitely worth writing about! :)

Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins's jazz

I found this book troubling in that it challenged my expectations of an Alan Moore work. This is almost free form literary jazz over the life of Steve Moore. The photography is top notch excellent. The story is winding and unconstrained with only really the final few pages settling back down into a typical narrative - and even that narration is decidedly unsettling.

This is something I had to read twice: once I read it thinking I was reading the usual unusual Alan Moore work, and that reading was failing me (or I it). Then I went back to it trying to feel the rhythms, to experience it rather than to "read" it, and I liked it a lot more. I've heard parts of Alan's musical version of this book: I feel like the two together would make for an excellent experience.

It's an extremely interesting piece. I don't think it's for everyone, but is marvelously well done.

FWIW: I bought this in the Oversized Hardcover edition: while it was gigantic, I would believe that that the paperback normal sized version would do a huge disservice to this piece. If you want this, spend the extra ducats and get the oversized hardcover edition.

I came out as a lesbian when I sixteen years old. It was one of the most liberating and empowering things I have ever done! Couldn't Put Down (Literally)

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's well paced coming out story firmly grounded in the current real world along with what becomes an incredibly touching romance. That's a combination that's guaranteed to drag me in.

I read the book in a single sitting and it was exhausting. Rivera really gets that awkward adolescent thing down. I'm very far from adolescence, but I could feel my emotions twisting in ways I haven't felt for years. At the same time, it's a subtle book. The angst is genuine, not jammed in your face. It's just that you feel so much for these characters that you can't help but get emotionally involved.

There is a twist. Isn't there always? It was handled really well though. I caught on before the trigger was pulled, but I never felt like it was being forced on me or there was a moment where the author's notes said "readers should figure out the twist here." In fact, when I went back, it was all so horribly obvious that I felt like I caught on well after I should have.

As I said above, another thing I really loved about the book was that it takes place in something that's recognizably the real world of the twenty-teens. A lot of GLBT young adult is simply out of date or written by older authors who came of age in a very different world and the hostility teens face often seems out of touch with the relatively accepting attitudes towards GLBT issues that society, particularly young people, have today. There's plenty of characters for whom the character's coming out is just not that big a deal. Yes, it's a surprise and it changes lives because that's what coming out does. Yes, it's complicated and scary because that's what being a teen, particular a teen in love is like. It's not a tragedy though.

I also really liked the way sex was handled in the book. It's very matter of fact, sensual, and avoids the silliness of a fade to black, but at the same time it's not at all explicit in the manner of erotica. What's particularly great about her depictions is they really truly get across the difference between having sex and making love and *spoilers* the latter is a whole lot better.

Great coming of age and coming out story

This book, this book, this book. Where to begin? It was definitely written from the point of view of coming out. The angst, the numerous questions posed, the fears, the joys of young love! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it reminds me of another great book called Taking The Long Way. I would beyond a shadow of a doubt recommend this book and this has definitely become one of my favorite books. It left me giddy, reflecting back on high school and wanting more of Emily and Micah's story!

This book is inspiring. It is so well written and so captivating. It makes you not want to put it down. It evokes so many emotions and you constantly find yourself rooting for the characters. I cannot say enough about this book, other than I absolutely LOVED it!! it is definitely a must read gay, straight, young, old....anyone.

A comprehensive history of modernization in Turkey

This book is all about the struggle given in Turkey towards modernization or Westernization, starts with 1750 and ends with modern Turkey. Very comprehensive, covering political,educational, religious and economical changes and birth of Turkish nationalism. A refresher book for the Turks and an exampler for other nations to learn from experiences. There are too many personages to know who they were, many similar names to follow in two hunder years of struggle towards modernization but author has provided clear cut phases in every part of the revolution. This book clearly shows the obstacle mollahs put on the way of modernization.When Einstein was putting a finishing touches to his theories, finally science was allowed being thought in the schools, all the story in this book.

A Timeless Masterpiece!

For anyone who wishes to study islam and secularism (especially in Ottoman Turkey) this is a "must read" book. Portions of this book was serialized in Dogan Avci's weekly "Yon" magazine in the 1960s. Berkes was deadly accurate in his political forecast....and it is a huge loss for humanity that he died in London and not in Turkey where he had wished to retire. Despite his warnings, look where Turkey is today.

Struggle for Modernization in Muslim Turkey

This book needs to be read especially now by all muslims of the world. Obviously, the muslim world has to change, strip itself from Islamic zealotry which interferes with every aspect of life, from education to justice. The first attempt to do this occured in the Ottoman Empire. The book is the story of the first modernization movement in the moslem world: its challenges, obstructions and results.
The reformists in the empire realize that religion and social institutions have to be separated since this was what Westerners had done. The reformists want to teach contemporary science in schools but here the challenge comes. No! everything is in Kur'an so we don't need to know that so-called science. Reformists attempt to outlaw polygamy but the same challenge comes. No! It accords with Islam. By and large, from the 18th century to the 20th modernization movement in Turkey faced this kind of challenges by clergy. Islam has been a religion that interferes with every aspects of life, every social institution so that it was necessary to separate religion and social institutions (secularism). Defeats of the empire to Russians and the West necessiated these reforms and despite the challenges, inch by inch Turkish instituions were secularized.
Today's Turkey, despite its flaws in democracy and economy, stands out as the most democratic and industrialized muslim country and a serious regional power. There are lessons to be taken from the Turkish experience of secularization and modernization for all muslim countries. And this book is an excellent start off.

The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW

I’m not in the habit of reading teen fiction, but a friend put me on to Little White Lies, by Brianna Baker and F. Bowman Hastie III (Soho Press). It’s a vivid Twenty-first Century version of what in the Eighteenth Century was called an epistolary novel. It consists of exchanges between a seventeen year old African-American teenager and a middle aged White guy who become her collaborator on a blog written for teenagers, which become an instant success and leads to media offers. But the heroine Coretta has a secret she can’t reveal: much of the blog is actually written by Karl, her ghostwriter. Complications ensue. The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW. It uses multiple fonts and graphic elements to reflect the different media in which the characters communicate about life and popular culture. On the way they say the smartest things I’ve ever read about Beyonc� and Kanye West. I loved this book.

I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book

I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book. It's far better than most of the YA stuff I read. The book's premise hooked me right from the beginning. I found the voice of both characters totally believable, the combination of a Black teen and White ghostwriter approaching middle age was unusual, and the way in which they came across each other reminded me of all sorts of creative alliances I know about. I found the New Yorkers to be just like the middle class New Yorkers I know. I liked them fine -- they're interesting and also shallow, observant and also self-obsessed, smart and also blind to things they don't want to deal with. There was a lot to identify with here.
What I really liked about the book was watching these essentially self centered characters struggle with creativity, fame, and secrets. They point to some of our societal challenges, including the ability to get to fast, anonymous fame that can easily run off with your personality. A great first collaboration that I hope to see more of.

Very timely, fun, raucous read

I read through Little White Lies in one night. Like the movie "Grizzly Man," I began the book with a basic idea of what was going to happen, but not how.

The pace of the book, is kind of dizzying, but it works for the story: it mirrors the crazy speed at which someone can become a viral Internet sensation overnight, We're thrust into the life of Coretta, a precocious, stunningly smart and motivated Black teenager in her last year of high school. She has somewhat conservative but supportive parents who drive her to be a high achiever at her school.

One day, she gets annoyed at some of their remarks at the breakfast table, fires off a blog post in reaction and goes to school. Through her well-meaning but clumsy best friend, she finds out that her blog post has gone viral. Coretta writes and few more posts and in a week or so, she has tens of thousands of followers. In the meantime, her boyfriend's parents, who sit on the board a large media company, take a shine to Coretta's blog and forward it to the heads of the media company, who reach out to Coretta for development for a TV show.

All of this, in the span of just days, has sent Coretta into a tailspin as she tries to manage her normal teenage life: school, boyfriend, school activities, trying to get into a good college. At this point, she is about to lose it, when Karl enters the picture.

Karl is a snarky early 40s white professional ghostwriter who has done a bunch of corporate ghostwriting as well as having successfully managed several social media accounts of prominent people. Far from a typical PR person, he's a eccentric who happened to go through adolescence in the 90s as a hip hop head and has all the amazing and fraught tendencies that one might imagine as a 14 year old whose immersion into Black American culture is Public Enemy, Native Tongues, etc.

Coretta's best friend, seeing the strain that being an Internet celebrity is placing on Coretta, arranges, through her parents, for Coretta and Karl to discuss working together, with Karl as a ghostwriter. Although somewhat apprehensive, Coretta agrees. Things get off to a good start, with a fairly harmonious working relationship, and Karl having a fairly good grip on the parameters of his engagement. When he writes a piece about Beyonce that far exceeds any of the posts that Coretta has written on her own, and Coretta locks in a TV deal with her as the star, things begin to unravel to the point that Coretta reveals that she is no longer the sole writer of the blog.

There's a lot more in there, but those are the bizarre and juicy suprises and twists that make the book worth reading.

I enjoyed the two voices in dialogue: Ms. Brown creates a convincing Coretta, a bold, opinionated and articulate high school student, while Mr. Hastie creates a clever foil of Karl, a liberal, cynical 41 year old journeyman social media guru/stoner with Black Power tendencies.

The book takes the form of chapters written in each character's voice, as well as Gchats and text messages between them that happen in the book. While this is unconventional and a little jarring at first, it adds to the authenticity of the book and the pacing...the Internet never sleeps, and because it doesn't, it makes it hard for us to do so.

This book is worth reading if you're interested in: 1) the social media and viral video phenomenon 2) adolescents becoming politicized and using the Internet as a platform for social justice 3) the ability of large media corporations to quickly co-opt organic content (writing, videos, etc) on the Internet and put their stamp on it. 4) novels with multiple authors and multiple voices in conversation (and tension) with each other

If you love great films, and love well crafted, magnificent film scores, this book is for you. To fully appreciate this book, you must read music, but the descriptive text is also excellent. The 3 and 4 staff musical scores clearly show how famed Hollywood composers create mood and deal with the psychology of important scenes in well known films. This is simply the best book on the analysis of film music. It describes and analyzes the drama of the film and the significance of the music in specific scences.
Hollywood, society, films, and film music were different years ago. This book covers the golden age of Hollywood and the golden age of film music. It includes excerpts of the actual scores of the best film composers who ever lived, matched with some of the best producers and directors ever.

Interesting reading for the really-wanna-knowers

This books tells you all you want to know about the filmmusic industry but in my opinion in a little too technical point of view. Many interesting chapters (especially Music for Cartoons, about a.o. Tom & Jerry) with MANY musical examples. Unfortunately the composers mentioned are a little out of date and masters like John Williams, John Barry and James Horner are not even mentioned! Catastrophally but it can be protected when we know how hard it would be to get musical examples from these composers printed in the book. You have to have a deep desire to learn about this business if this book is gonna give you anything. If you have the desire then it's absolutely great reading and a "must-have" in your library!

As long as I can remember, I've made up adventures. I admit the early creative stories featured me riding the range with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and saving the West. What a disappointment to learn that Roy was exclusively committed to Dale! Eventually, my best friend from across the street and I decided to become better detectives than Nancy Drew. We drove our parents and neighbors crazy sticking our pert little noses where they didn't belong. About that time I started writing down my adventures, but mostly I was a reader. Not until I read Nora Roberts' early novels did I decide to create my own romance manuscripts. My road to publishing was a lot slower than Nora's was. No surprise there! I still read Nora's books—as well as those of countless other authors—but now I write full time. Unless life interferes, that is. My Hero and I live one a small acreage in the ranching and horse country of North Central Texas. Finally, my childhood dream has come true and I’m in the midst of cowboys. Our two daughters are grown and in their own homes not far away. Living with Hero and me now are Webster, our sweet black Shih Tzu, and our two shorthaired cats: Sebastian, a large black and white tuxedo who thinks he's our watchcat; and Bailey Erin, a shy apricot tabby who mostly stays in my office. When I'm not writing, I love spending time with family, reading, traveling with Hero, browsing antique malls and estate sales, and digging into family history and genealogy. I truly have loved reading the Men of Stone Mountain series by (in my opinion) the Queen of Western Romance, Caroline Clemmons. When I first read Book One of the series, BRAZOS BRIDE, I fell in love with the hunky hero, Micah Stone and felt he was my favorite among the three Stone brothers introduced. But, after reading Book Two of the series, HIGH STAKES BRIDE, gotta admit that Zach is now my favorite brother. I have a feeling that when the much anticipated Book Three comes out, I will also find Joel Stone my "new" favorite. You might consider me fickle, but the reason the hero in each book endeared themselves so much to this reader is because Caroline Clemmons has such an amazing skill at creating characters that are unforgettable, each with their own unique personality and voice. You not only see their strengths but also gain deeper insight into their scars and hidden wounds that make up the multi-dimensional man they have become. So, it is only right and proper that the reader should fall madly in love with each hero of each book, and think no one compares to him.

I also very much loved the heroine in HIGH STAKES BRIDE, Mary Alice Price, who is just as brave and determined to take control of her life as she is inherently sweet, honest, amusing, and wholly endearing. One of the first things about her that won me over was her cute personality and often amusing habit of seeking intervention and/or understanding through impromptu silent prayer during the many challenges and life-threatening events that she faces on her journey. She definitely has an engaging personality that leaps off the page. Pairing her up with a retired Texas Ranger who's just been jilted at the altar for the second time, and this time by a Mail Order Bride, is pure genius. He doesn't trust women and wants nothing to do with any female not a member of his family. Alice is on the run from murderous step-brothers who staked and lost her in a poker game. All she wants now is to escape to Atlanta and start a new life. Without giving too much away, both Zach and Alice decide to gamble on one another temporarily in order to achieve their respective goals and go their separate ways. A bargain is made that requires alot of bluffing to friends and family, and the temptation for both Alice and Zach to just fold and walk away is a constant struggle. Danger is ever near, but the biggest risk Alice and Zach face just may be losing their hearts. A must read, and a keeper for your library. Am really looking forward to Book 3 in the series, and optimistic that the series will continue with secondary characters introduced in the first two books, including a future look at Seth Stone (introduced in this book).

Wonderful!

I loved this story as much as I loved the one preceding it!! This is truely a wonderful series! From the very beginning it captures you attention and I had a seriously hard time putting it down! I can not wait for the next in the series to hear the last Stone Brothers' story!!

Let's Pretend

19th century Texas - The men are brave and strong, and women are few and far between. Zach Stone has a ranch with a nice stone house, but he needs a wife. Mary Alice Price has nothing but troubles. Desperation forces injured Alice into Zach's camp, and a hero has to be heroic to the damsel in distress.
On the journey to Zach's ranch, they add 7 year-old orphan, Seth Barnes, and his dog Harry to the group. Desperation forces Zach and Alice to agree to a brief pretend engagement. Zach's aunts, brothers, an attentive preacher, and assorted neighbors make it difficult to just pretend an attraction. A life as Zach's wife tempts Mary Alice to re-think her plans to go to Atlanta. Zach soon finds it hard to send his pretend bride packing.
The pretended engagement is frought with problems; Alice's green hair, a smitten preacher, Zach's once white but now bright yellow shirt, and a growing mutual love that can survive the final knowledge about Alice's step-family.
