very good reference

I'm not a knot theorist or topologist at all, but I've found this useful as a source for basic results and for picking up some basic facts about knots and low-dimensional topology. It's widely cited, and for good reasons.

Missing many important recent (and even not-so-recent by now) topics, but perhaps this is not the right place for them anyway.

too many mistakes, outdated material

This book is teeming with mistakes. Singleton implementations are broken(the current idiom for singleton is enum singleton, static class holder(described in this book) is an idiom for safe publication only, but it does not work for singleton because there can be several classloaders in JVM) - double checked locking in this book misses volatile keyword, which is crucial. Nevertheless, the book confirms that implementation does not work and says that "the problem was reportedly fixed in Java 5". Guys, I've bought this book for Java 7 certification, of course it should reflect changes made in Java 5.

The authors also do not distinguish the difference between widening of primitive types and upcasting of classes.

The sum() method on page 166 creates n Double object wrappers, instead of using primitive double variable etc. and so on.

This book also contains many groundless optimization tips, for example it states that final classes in Java are more efficient, because "the method calls are resolved in compiler time" . That is wrong for Hotspot JVM, because it's smart enough to apply analogous optimization looking whether the method is effectively overriden in subclass or not - it's done during the classloading and has nothing to do with final keyword.
You should not justify twisting your code only by a hypothesis that there may exist some JVM where some specific optimization *may* work.

A good review but has errors

I used this book to study for the OCPJP Java 1.7 exam. It prepared me. I used Mock Exam 1 as an open book test. Good thing I did it as open-book because several answers were wrong. In particular this : Question 83 asks you to choose 1 correct answer from 4 possible code snippets. The problem is that two of them are right. The answer book says "Options b) and c) uses the finally block, which is not applicable with try-with-resource." Which is incorrect. The FINALLY clause is perfectly acceptable with try-with-resource. Some of the questions also had typographical, syntax, and grammar errors, which make it seem as if they rushed to press without bug-proofing the exams.

Otherwise, this was a good study aid. It seems comprehensive.

Good Preparation- I passed on the first try

I bought the Kindle version. It's only like $20 or so. I'm studying for both the OCA and the OCP at the same time. I have my OCA scheduled in a few days, and I'll schedule my OCP later. I've noticed that this helps me with my OCP preparation as well as my OCA. I recommend it, as well as reading the online Oracle Java learning trails, and the enthuware.com mock exams. These three resources will help with OCP. I have an excellent book for the OCA, which of course paired with enthuware.com mock exams and the learning trails.

Update- I completed this book the first time. It's like 650 pages. I will re-read it and then take the enthuware mock exams I bought (which they updated for me recently). I like the book, I like the writing style, I believe in the content, and it's nice to have somebody gather this information for me in a way that helps me target the exam. I'll update this when I get results on my exam. My recommendation is to read it twice, and I'm following my own recommendation. 650 pages is a lot of information to take in.

Update- After reading this book twice, taking and reviewing both included exams, reading the online Oracle.com Javadocs for the OCP JP SE 7 certification, getting a wee bit of practical experience, and taking and reviewing all 5+1 associated Enthuware exams, I passed the 804 exam on my first try. I got a 70%, where 65% is a passing score. This book was an important introductory step toward getting this certification. The study process up to today (June 9 2014 pass) took me 6 months of part-time study.

I recommend studying this book as a part of the above steps to prepare for the 804 exam.

Implementing Models of Financial Derivatives is a comprehensive treatment of advanced implementation techniques in VBA for models of financial derivatives. Aimed at readers who are already familiar with the basics of VBA it emphasizes a fully object oriented approach to valuation applications, chiefly in the context of Monte Carlo simulation but also more broadly for lattice and PDE methods. Its unique approach to valuation, emphasizing effective implementation from both the numerical and the computational perspectives makes it an invaluable resource.

The book comes with a library of almost a hundred Excel spreadsheets containing implementations of all the methods and models it investigates, including a large number of useful utility procedures. Exercises structured around four application streams supplement the exposition in each chapter, taking the reader from basic procedural level programming up to high level object oriented implementations.

Written in eight parts, parts 1-4 emphasize application design in VBA, focused around the development of a plain Monte Carlo application. About the Author
Nick Webber learnt to programme with Algol 60 and has been programming ever since. Currently he a Reader at Warwick Business School where, amongst other things, he develops computational methods for the numerical valuation of financial methods although he has also developed fast lattice methods.
Before his academic incarnation Nick worked in system design and implementation in industry, both in IT groups and as a consultant. He has taught computational finance in C++ and VBA for many years, in Universities and to practitioners. He combines a research and theory oriented perspective with a long of experience of real applications. He advocates sensible design precepts at all times.
Nick has a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Imperial College, London

Very helpful, but can't read the vba codes in kindle version

I have been reading this book in kindle version (without the CD ROM) for a while and I'm now in chapter 10. Although I don't mind to manually write the vba codes, I started to get annoyed when the vba codes cannot be read clearly from the figures (eg fig 10.14 the InputManager object).

Is it possible for Amazon / the publisher to increase the resolution of the figures or to make the vba codes available for the kindle book buyers to download?

Please help. Thanks a lot!

A worthy addition to the library

Dr. Webber is very knowledgeable about the topics in the book and the VBA discussions are definitely "next-level" stuff. Very "British" in its tone, so you have to be paying attention when you read it; if you skip over some words, you're bound to miss something important. Overall, best book on VBA programming I've seen so far.

I bought this book for background in Microwave before being assigned as PM of a Microwave project. It's a good book and gives great information, but does not detail site and path surveys, which is what I needed most. Definitely worth the money spent.

Excellent Microwave Engineering Book

This book provides an excellent overview of microwave engineering within the industry. It is well written and laid out in an introduction to deployment fashion. Excellent discussion on link budget development and a thorough view of availability versus reliability within the microwave path. I like how the author introduces you to the basic fundamentals of microwave networks and then moves into planning, design, and deployment. If you design or work with microwave radios, this book should be on your shelf as a right hand tool. The book has been an excellent reference to me for developing software and microwave link budgets. Great job!

Christine Norman is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University.

Belinda is a Reader in Forensic Psychology. She teaches primarily within forensic psychology, with specific focus on sexual crime. She has a strong background in psychometrics and individual differences, and retains her enthusiasm for quantitative research (continuing to teach multivariate statistics in what she hopes is a fun and interactive manner). Her research is leading her to incorporate qualitative research methods as she continues to develop a programme of research in collaboration with HMP Whatton (the largest sex offender prison in Europe) that makes a significant and practical contribution to our understanding of sex offenders and sexual crime. Additional areas of interest (both in terms of teaching and research) include the psychology of fraud, lying and deception.

Safe Passage - A Lifeline

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal stages of colon cancer, our family was literally innundated with "grief coping" books. Being an avid reader, and desperate for anything to help make sense of the chaos and pain, I read them all. SAFE PASSAGE is the only one I have kept and have recently ordered several to have on hand to share with friends. This book is composed of short meditations that are appropriate for all stages of griefwork. I continue to refer to my copy, some nine months after her death. I find that this is a "living" book, with certain passages speaking exactly what I'm feeling, every time I read it - be it a week after her death or months after. Moreover, it is not specifically geared towards the loss of a parent, spouse, child, etc - my stepfather has found it as wonderful as I have. This book has been a lifeline to our family.

I bought this book after the loss of my mother last year and I have found that I have come back to the book at different stages of my grief. I have given copies of this twice since then to friends who have lost loved ones. The reflections in the book are short and thought-provoking.

I do not know Molly Fumia, but I do know the subject of grief. I wrote THE JEWISH WAY IN DEATH AND MOURNING. I have never read so profound and beautiful a work on this subject. I underlined it all, and ordered another clean copy. It is memorable; a work of art, a Divine inspiration.

Excellent Book

I really enjoyed using this book because it is so well put together. I have been teaching for years and I rarely find a textbook that keeps the students engaged without my even prodding them. Great experience so far with this book, will continue to use it.

About the Author
Diana Kendall is Professor of Sociology at Baylor University, where she has been recognized as an Outstanding Professor. She has taught a variety of courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory (undergraduate and graduate), Sociology of Medicine, Sociology of Law, and Race, Class, and Gender. Previously, she enjoyed many years of teaching sociology and serving as chair of the Social and Behavioral Science Division at Austin Community College. Dr. Kendall's areas of specialization and primary research interests are sociological theory and the sociology of medicine. Her books include SOCIOLOGY IN OUR TIMES: THE ESSENTIALS (Cengage Learning, 2016), THE POWER OF GOOD DEEDS: PRIVILEGED WOMEN AND THE SOCIAL REPRODUCTION OF THE UPPER CLASS (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002), MEMBERS ONLY: ELITE CLUBS AND THE PROCESS OF EXCLUSION (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), and FRAMING CLASS: MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF WEALTH AND POVERTY IN AMERICA, 2nd Edition (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012). Her most recent scholarly publication is "Class: Still Alive and Reproducing in the United States," a book chapter in PRIVILEGE: A READER, 4th Edition (2016, Westview Press). Dr. Kendall is actively involved in national and regional sociological associations, including the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Southwestern Sociological Association. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was invited to membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

This text book was very simple to read and almost too easy for college. I found it boring, but class may have been part of it. Pictures were nice though!

This is a text book with a portion of, seemingly every chapter, the book dedicated to injustice and illuminating prejudice. So tiresome, is there nothing else to focus on in the way civilization and the societies within them function.

It is an alright book. Not good renting quality from Amazon

Rented this book for a community college class, pages were very bent, pages were heavily marked with highlighter, and sticky notes were still sticking out of the book.

Overall, the book itself is okay, I cannot tell if the book itself is unorganized or if my professor teaching the class is unorganized. I think some of the subsections aren't clearly labeled so I am never sure if a subheader falls under the larger header or if it is a topic on its own.
