“All in all, this is an awesome book and beyond doubt a must read for Halo fans.” ―Teen Ink

From the Inside Flap
As the bloody Human-Covenant War rages on Halo, the fate of humankind may rest with one warrior, the lone SPARTAN survivor of another legendary battle . . . the desperate, take-no-prisoners struggle that led humanity to Halo--the fall of the planet Reach. Now, brought to life for the first time, here is the full story of that glorious, doomed conflict.

While the brutal Covenant juggernaut sweeps inexorably through space, intent on wiping out humankind, only one stronghold remains--the planet Reach. Practically on Earth's doorstep, it is the last military fortress to defy the onslaught. But the personnel here have another, higher priority: to prevent the Covenant from discovering the location of Earth.

Outnumbered and outgunned, the soldiers seem to have little chance against the Covenant, but Reach holds a closely guarded secret. It is the training ground for the very first "super soldiers." Code-named SPARTANs, these highly advanced warriors, specially bioengineered and technologically augmented, are the best in the universe--quiet, professional, and deadly.

Now, as the ferocious Covenant attack begins, a handful of SPARTANs stand ready to wage ultimate war. They will kill, they will be destroyed, but they will never surrender. And at least one of them--the SPARTAN known as Master Chief--will live to fight another day on a mysterious and ancient, artificial world called Halo. . . .

HALO IS A HELLUVA READ!
By King Reviewer
I dont even play computer games but the novel intrigued me in its presentation and book cover. Now, I have heard of this game and its new system coming out and I have tried a few game/novels out and have not been impressed - UNTIL NOW! Eric Nylund's writing is great and I already have two other books from him since I read this novel. Mr. Nylund's story telling and bigger than life characters in this book make it clearly above and beyond just a game book. The story starts out with a woman named Dr. Halsey who is creating a super soldier for the future war that is coming in the guise of an alien race that seems unstoppable and unknown to earthlings in any way shape or form. Dr. Halsey and her accomplice Jacob Keyes take a dozen children from orphanages and make them into super beings thru endless surgeries, drugs, and a battle school that is far superior and secret than normal military. The leader, and main character comes from a boy/man they call number 117, or John. John is not the strongest or the fastest, but he has the mind of a leader. The reader then goes on a journey thru these poor kid's boot camp and watch them fail as well as conquer their own fears and others prejudice. This insight and character development, mixed with great action sequences is what saves this novel from being just another fast written game book for the boys. The author's writing style is made for this type of novel and it shows in every space battle as well as groundside wars as well. This novel goes thru about 25 years or so, so you get to follow the kid's growth, as well as some of the other normal humans rise and falls thru the years. The aliens are introduced slowly and revealed for who and what they are in a way that keeps the reader wanting to read more to find out - very smart! If you love military space opera with lots of great action with lots of great characters written in - then you will find that this is not just another game novel - I can't wait for the new book!

A MUST READ novel if you enjoy the game!
By Amazon Customer
The Fall of Reach is a prequel telling the story of humanity's war against a technologically superior race called the Covenant, a mysterious race on a religious crusade to destroy humanity. The story focuses on the hero of the Halo Xbox game and his fellow Spartans, enhanced human beings bred as soldiers for humanity's military and the best chance the humans have for victory in the losing war against the Covenant. The events in the book directly lead into the events in the game.
Even without playing the game, it's a pretty good book by itself. The sci-fi universe created by Bungie (the makers of the game) which Nylund expands on is detailed and believable. Nylund's descriptions of space battles and futuristic militaries are excellent, as well as his portrayals of the human military strategy and tactics while fighting against a superior enemy. The book flows well and is an easy read.
But the book is raised to a new level if you play the game alongside reading the novel. Nylund's otherwise average character development and background instead become outstanding insight into the life of the game's hero and opens your eyes to the bigger picture of the Halo universe. You become truly immersed, which makes both the book reading and video game experience that much more rich.
Sci-fi nitpickers will criticize some of the technological aspects of the Halo universe (for example, it is 500 years in the future where humans have mastered faster-than-light travel and true artificial intelligence, yet soldiers and ships still use solid ammo as their primary weapons), but those issues are minor. Nylund is still able to suspend disbelief. And it doesn't hinder the overall good story.
Overall, good book by itself. But I recommend you play the game as well. If you enjoy the game, then this novel is a must read! I can't wait until the sequel for both!

Great book even if you don't play the game
By Chainsawash
As many people have said, most books of this type (based on a game) seem to be quickly written and rather unexciting. This book is the exception to the rule. I was rather apprehensive going into this book but found myself hooked very quickly. From the training of the new breed of 'supersoldiers' to the fantastic space and ground battles this book never slows down. The characters are wonderfully well developed, the action is intense and exciting (loved the battle for Sigma Octanus), and the book as a whole is perfectly paced (you'll never say 'it was good, but slowed down a bit in the middle'). If you are planning on playing the game (I'm halfway through it myself) this book is a must read. Even if you don't plan on playing Halo but are a fan of military sci-fi action this book will satisfy. I will also be seeking out Nylunds other novels.

What’s a girl to do when your destined soul mates turn their backs on you, leaving you with no idea what to do with your life and afraid that they were driven away by a part of your inner self that you kept hidden from them? That’s easy. Step one, power bond with a golden dragon who has chosen you, personally, to wipe out the galaxy’s greatest force for evil. Step two, get your favorite ex-bounty hunter aunt to teach you how to kick Doftle butt. Step three, take the family space yacht for a cruise among the stars with a tiny 9 inch humanoid (who happens to have the ability to shape-shift into an enormous feline creature with poison-tipped fur) riding your shoulder for company.

What’s a girl to do when the yacht collides with an invisible Doftle space station? That’s easy. Step one, grab your personal, matched set of the deadliest edged weapons in the Thousand Worlds and hop into the nearest life pod. Step two, crash land on a snow covered mountain on an unknown and hidden world that the Doftles are using for their sinister purposes. Step three, save the lives of a giant sentient wolf and two orphan children who join you on a quest to break the Doftles’ evil hold on the planet and its people.

What’s a girl to do when the men she thought never to see again suddenly show up out of nowhere, tell you they love you, throw a few dozen wrenches into your plans, and bring to a head the issue of your greatest secret--a secret that could be either the glue that binds you and your soul mates in an unbreakable bond . . . or the wedge that drives you apart forever? Not a clue in the cosmos. Sometimes, a girl just has to wing it.

4 1/2 stars! The best of the series so far.
By JLW
I've read eight of the soul-linked books as well as the 3 previous ICARUS books. Highly recommend that you read them in order to get the full enjoyment of the storyline. I think this one may be my favorite. The story begins with Salene recently rejected by her fated mates who unbeknownst to her, are under the control of mind devices. I really liked how Salene picked herself up and grasped at a new life for herself. She is helped along the way by Jinjie whose manner of speech I find adorable and others. The way the author weaves in characters from earlier books is a nice touch too. I'd probably call this a sci-fi adventure with a touch of magic and certainly lots of heart from both her Gryffons and the children she takes under he wing.

Oddly enough, I did not like the 1st book of this series; so much so, that I didn't try the 2nd book until a couple years later and even then only because I was desperate to read something the Ellora's Cave debacle seemed to have dried up a lot of offerings. Anyway, glad I tried the soul-linked series again as it lead me to the ICARUS series which I find even better as it avoided some of the repetitiveness of the mating ritual depicted in every soul-linked book. Overall, it's pretty impressive how the author has managed to create intriguing stories and likable heroines, consistently amongst 11 books (I'm omitting the 1st book, Dracon's Woman, since as I say, I didn't care for it). I look forward to her next book in the ICARUS series.

Solid Addition to Series
By 30 Book A Month Reader
The story opens with Salene and her 3 fated mates parting ways. I won't go into the why in order to not give away any important issues in the story. Because she no longer feels she has a purpose in life, Salene bonds with a golden dragon and begins training in weaponry and martial arts. On her way to visit her sister, her spaceship has a serious accident, causing Salene to abandon ship in a space pod. Upon arriving on the planet, Salene makes connections with some of the inhabitants and discovers an entire colony being kept as slaves by the Doftle. Salene immediately decides it is her mission to rescue these slaves.

I really enjoyed this installment of L. J. Phillips. As always, the world building was excellent and the plot of the story was very engrossing. I enjoyed the conflict between Salene and her mates, and the way a resolution was brought about. I also enjoyed most of the secondary characters, finding them to add to the story rather than distract from it. I have two small complaints, which brought the story down to 4 stars for me.

The character of Jinjie was a huge distraction for me. One reviewer loved the speech patterns he had, while I found them to be a distraction to the story. I had to stop and decipher what he was saying, and for me that interrupted the story flow. I also felt that the author leaned on Jinjie too much for problem solving. Can't make a fire? Jinjie will take care of it. Need a blanket? Jinjie to the rescue. Need something to stop thermoimagery? Jinjie will handle that too. After a while, it was simply too much.

In addition, Salene found two small abandoned children that she grew to love very much. I enjoyed both of their characters, but the interchange between Salene and Mali - after a while - became just too much, too perfect, too sweet & sticky. I understand that this was a small girl with no love, but the interchanges were unrealistic and over the top.

All that said, I enjoyed this book very much - far more than the last one, and I am looking forward to the next one. Considering the depth of world building Phillips has developed, it is amazing she keeps it all straight and yet manages to build on it in a logical and cohesive manner.

WOW another great one!!!
By Amazon Customer
I love Laura Jo Phillips. I have been very impatiently waiting for Salene's story. I was not disappointed. This is the best book yet in the Hearts of ICARUS series. Sometimes it seems that some authors churn out story after story just to collect the money and let the quality of the story fall to the side. That is not an issue with Ms. Phillips. You will not be disappointed with the purchase!

Wonderful New Adult Fantasy!
By Tishia (Paranormal Opinion)
Embers in a Dark Frost is the first in a new 2-part series by Kelly Keaton. This is not a Young Adult book. I would put it in the New Adult Fantasy genre. It follows a young woman named Deira, who is a half blood. She is shunned because of the human blood that runs in her veins. She leads a sad, lonely life of a servant and doesn't realize how wonderful she really is.

The world building is wonderful. The world of Innis Falls is slowly dying, and the author does a good job of capturing that. The writing and descriptions are done beautifully.

The hero in the story is Balen, the King of Sydhr. He meets Deira and knows without a doubt that she is the red haired halfling who is described in the prophecy. She is supposed to journey with Balen to find the light that will save their world. Deira is reluctant to go on the dangerous task because she doesn't believe that she has any powers. I liked seeing how she became a more confident person throughout the book. She is very easy to relate to and a very likable character.

The character of Balen is swoonworthy. He is a tough, fearless, handsome warrior. He is also the first person to treat Deira with the respect she deserves. He doesn't condemn her for not being like everyone else. Their relationship builds pretty slowly. They have great chemistry together. There are a few steamy scenes, but it's not too descriptive or erotic.

There is a cliffhanger ending that will leave you very frustrated. Fortunately there is a second book that should be coming sometime in 2013. I think that anyone who is a fan of paranormal romance would really enjoy this book.

Seductive and delectable!
By xjessirae
Embers in a Dark Frost was one seductive and enticing book! Kelly Keaton created a dark and delicious novel I had no trouble devouring. Complete with magic, romance, and mythology, Embers in a Dark Frost gives you a whole new world to fall in love with.

The world in this book was complex and intricate, basically a learning experience where you figure things out as the story moves along. Keaton had the perfect balance of magic and power within this book that surrounded different houses with different elemental powers. Innis Fail was a mysterious, dark, and beautiful world that enraptured me. I loved that Keaton explained the ways of Innis Fail and the falling out between that world and Eire, the human world. She explained the war that has been raging on and the deterioration of Innis Fail without its light. Each new place that the protagonists find themselves in is throughly explored and described with great detail.

Deira was a beautiful and strong character. She was different among her kind because she was a halfling with human blood and red hair. While this made her stand out, people looked down on her. Even Deira's family shunned her, made her into a servant. In the beginning, I could feel Deira's sadness and loneliness. All she really wanted was to be accepted and to be loved, but she didn't get that from her people at all. Being a servant most of her life didn't put out the spark of life in Deira's eyes though. She had a mind of her own and was even a little defiant. She didn't know much about herself or her capabilities, but within her was a quiet strength waiting to come out. She was someone who endured so much hardship, but was still hoping for more. Before she went off on a journey to find the light of Innis Fail, I saw Deira as someone who was determined and had a good heart. What I love about Deira was how she did the right thing even when she was confused, scared, and had doubts. She wasn't selfish and even in her dilemma and all that she went through, she saw the good. Deira was capable of compassion, sympathy, and understanding. For me, Deira was a true heroine even in her times of hesitation.

The romance in Embers in a Dark Frost was steamy and sexy. I absolutely loved Deira and Balen together. They had such great intense chemistry that was so apparent the moment they met. I loved how the romance didn't overpower the storyline of the book, but it was still an important part, especially for Deira's growth. I really thought that Balen gave Deira the strength, the courage, the acceptance and the love she needed. And Balen was just wonderful. He was brave, loyal and intimidating. He was also rugged and exuded this immense power and superiority, but he was alluring all the same. I was in awe at Balen's honor and sacrifice. He was willing to give up everything for the sake of Innis Fail and his people. He always had true and good intentions, even when it seemed like he had a million secrets. For me, Balen was the best of the best. Formidable, magnificent, and the perfect match for Deira.

I must say that Kelly Keaton had me spellbound. What she created in Embers in a Dark Frost seriously made me a fan for life. Her writing was timeless and able to transport you into an imaginable world that had a life of its own. She had a way with words that brought in a sense of the past that was elegant and sophisticated. There's a prophecy, a foretelling that drives the story, giving it a great pace, and pushes Deira and Balen through their adventure. What was so great was the amount of tension, twists and surprises within this book along with the heartbreak and tragedy that becomes unforgettable. This story wasn't just a romance or about saving a world, but it was also about finding and believing yourself and doing the right thing even when you're not sure what the right thing really is.

Overall, Embers in a Dark Frost was one delectable read that was rich, otherworldly and completely wondrous. I'm dying to get my hands on the next book!

Can't wait for a book two!
By samantha
This book captured my interest from the start. The characters are well written and enjoyable and have their own multidemensional personalities. Like the main character, the reader goes back and forth on how various characters truly are and what is a ploy. I love the "good" guy and I loved the " bad" guy. The cover is beautiful and the story is great and can't wait for book two.

This is the Gregg Braden I've Come to Know and Love (through his writing)
By Franciska
I couldn't get into Fractal Time (and his other book written since FT). Even though this book touches upon some of FT book's concepts, this book is vastly different. The Turning Point is a marker in time that is more personal in nature. I love it when Gregg incorporates his personal stories to illustrate points, and this book does just that. Turning Point: Resilience in a Time of Extremes is a comfort manual full of practical wisdom. It's a life-changing survival guide. This guide teaches us (or reinforces) the art of critical thinking by asking questions. It also offers us techniques to get us in a better state of heart coherence to those familiar with Heartmath.

This book could be scary for some - those stuck in past, reminiscing on how things used to be. This book can be slightly jarring. The world has changed, and there is no turning back. This book is a wakeup call. Yet, as scary as that message is, Gregg Braden offers hope, a silver lining.

I've had the opportunity to meet Mr. Braden and he's very authentic, someone you genuinely want to know more about, to soak in his wisdom.

***Note: the book gets a little repetitive from his previous works and a lot of 2012 literature, but it's definitely worth sticking it out.

Gregg Braden Has Already Told Us Most Everything That's in This Book
By The Scottsdale Observer
I am a big fan of Gregg Braden. I've read a good number of his books, have listened to his audio CDs, have watched his DVDs, and I've seen him speak live four times. In listening to him read the audio CD version of this book I kept waiting for him to break new ground, but he told me very little that I hadn't already heard from him. For me the basic summary of what he's telling us in this book is 1) The world is facing multiple major crises, 2) The world is dangerously low on important natural resources, and 3) We all need to come together as a people to live in harmony and solve these major problems. This is all good information, but I've heard it before from him. If you are new to Gregg Braden, or if you haven't read his last book, "Deep Truth", I would recommend getting that book before getting "The Turning Point". I really enjoyed "Deep Truth", and a lot of that information is also discussed in "The Turning Point", too. But there are subjects discussed in "Deep Truth" that had me much more riveted to the book, including Gregg's disclosure that DNA testing has now been done on well-preserved specimens of Neanderthal Man, and there is almost no way that we could have ever evolved from him.

ANOTHER POSITIVE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
By Robert Steven Thomas
I am a true admirer of the author's work and original thinking. (See my 5-Star reviews of "Deep Truth" and "Divine Matrix.") At the same time, I was a bit disappointed with this new book as compared with the previous two. The primary message still rings true... we DO live in a universe of connectivity as more and more individuals are coming to accept, but the delivery and support of this critical message is not as powerfully presented as in his past work. Too much repetition. For those of you who have not read his prior work, this book might serve as a good starting point in conceptualizing the notion of a "Universal Intelligence" which is a natural dimension of reality through which all life-forms are intertwined. Braden is a master at describing this under-appreciated state of existence. Also ... though we are getting closer and I remain optimistic in knowing mankind will eventually "get it" long-term ... there is still a lot of work that remains to be done before humanity reaches the "turning point" we all hope to achieve.
Intelligent Intervention

From the Back Cover

This is a revised and updated edition of the successful executive guide to strategic thinking and practice. Developed from the author’s experience in industry and packaged in a concise, accessible format, the text is ideal in training strategic managers.

More than ever, firms are seeking new ways to approach their strategy, if not to achieve strategic growth, then to counter threats with more effective defensive strategies. This revised edition offers students and executives further help in developing insight or ‘getting the big picture’ through new frameworks.

The text provides the strategy practitioner with a systematic and insight-driven approach to strategic thinking.

“George Tovstiga achieves a rare balance with Strategy in Practice. It is a strategy guide that is clear enough, researched enough yet pragmatic enough to work in complex, international, multilingual contexts and in emerging economies. Moreover it is original and helpful – focusing on creating value, not plans. Essential reading.”—Professor Jon Foster-Pedley, Dean and Director of Henley Business School in South Africa (Johannesburg)

“The 2nd edition of Strategy in Practice provides new insight into the strategy process and explores how strategic thinking contributes to the creation of a differentiated value offering. George Tovstiga examines the role of sense making from spatial and process perspectives based on both high- and supporting-levels of strategic analysis. Strategy in practice case examples provide insightful illustration of how this occurs in the practice field. This book is highly recommended for both managers and students studying strategic management in various countries and across all industries.”—Professor Andrey G. Medvedev, Graduate School of Management (GSOM), St. Petersburg University, Russia

“This book is excellent, for several reasons. It stresses how strategy can be much more practiced, more tangible. It puts heavy emphasis on the people that make effective strategies happen. A must for practitioners, students and academics alike.”—Professor Peter Lorange, Lorange Institute of Business, Zurich, Switzerland

“Executives charged with the critical task of formulating a strategy for their business can be overwhelmed by the current profusion of tools and techniques that aspire to offer advice and insight into that process. Rather than mastering all of these, managers can now look to this book as a clever integration of the best of those ideas into a coherent and pragmatic approach to the development of strategy in any organization. It should become a vital tool for all strategists in the future.”—Professor David J. Collis, Harvard Business School, Cambridge, USA

About the Author

Good ideas, thoughtful and logical, but a very difficult read
By Gregory D. Githens
There is a lot to like in this book, and I give it 4 stars on the basis of content. However, despite the subtitle ("A Practitioners Guide to Strategic Thinking), few practitioners will have the patience to read through it. I really had to discipline myself. I would read a few pages and get tired, but force myself to come back to it.

Finally, on page 221 the book finds a reader-friendly voice. The author describes the experiences of CEO Andy Grove at Intel as they grapple with the move out of memories in the mid-1980s and into a leadership position in microprocessors. Tovstiga develops the example, and explains its relevance and significance to his model of strategy.

The book's title of "Strategy in Practice" seems to be important to the author, but I found the author's discussion tedious. Who cares about the distinction of strategy AS practice contrasted to strategy IN practice? The answer to that question appears to be academics, rather than the practitioner audience stated in the subtitle. So what is this book really about?

This book is really about strategic analysis in the context of business competition. Tovstiga lays the book out logically, starting with Figure 1.1 illustrating these key activities: articulating the problem, framing the issues, sense making & strategic insight, reconstructing reality, strategy formulation, and strategic response. The chapters align with the illustrated model. Strategy is a messy undertaking, and it seems to me that Tovstiga has found a reasonable balance between showing the complexity without oversimplifying.

A few words on why I bought this book are in order. I coach & train individuals and small groups in the art and practice of thinking strategically; these are busy people who want a personal capacity for strategic thinking. All of my clients are business people, but I also provide this pro bono for selected non-profits charitable organizations. It is valuable for me to know the relevant literature and there is always something to learn. It is my view that strategic thinking is a style of thinking, and that a strategist is person who competently applies certain thinking skills. In my view, the real value of strategic thinking is that it produces insights, and those insights are subsequently used to create powerful and effective strategies.

Given my interest in strategic thinking and insight creation, I was especially interested in the book's discussion on sense-making a creator of insights. Chapter 3 is titled "Sense Making and Strategic Insight" and Chapter 4 is titled "Insight-Driven Strategic Analysis." Having read those two chapters several times, underlining key ideas and making margin notes, I have to say that my assessment is that the topics were treated adequately but not brilliantly.

Which brings me back to my overall evaluation of the book: It is just tough to read. It has a professorial tone; for example, academic journal articles are frequently cited where the "Smith argues that" and "Jones argues that." There are several ultra-long sentences in the book: 57 words and 84 words to cite just two examples. (The three sentences that you just read total 58 words.) For readability, I give it 1 star.

For practitioners under pressure to analyze situations and develop strategy, I suggest that you jump right to the two appendices. Appendix A provides a worksheet/template for examining competition, customer needs, and internal resources. It's straightforward, and should stimulate some insights. Tovstiga spends considerable time in the book developing the idea of a firm's unique competing space, which is a conceptual space where the firm is meeting customers' needs in a way that is differentiated from competitors' offerings.

Appendix B takes the notion of the unique competitive space, and provides the reader a set of guiding questions about external context, the firm's competitive edge, customer needs, the firm's strengths and weakness. It then asks the reader to pull it all together into a nutshell statement of "our uniquely differentiated strategy" that can be developed into a concise narrative statement. This is practical, and any person who does this is more likely to have a useful strategy than a person who doesn't do the exercise.

I do think there are some real gems in this book, and I am sure that I will be returning to the book to reflect on many of the ideas. However, I am going to have to discover my own real-world examples to understand the relevance of the many abstract concepts.

It makes a lot of sense, practical. It makes the strategic process simple. It does however have an academic flavour to it.

An epic book of Zombies!
By Shay VanZwoll
Zombies have been increasingly popular the past few years, but stories and myths of zombies (or zombis) have been around for even longer. From Romeroesque zombies to radioactive robots, with everything in between, this is a great collection of everything zombie.

And by everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Thirty six short stories are available within this collection. There are poems about zombies, stories about voodoo zombis, extra-short short stories, and longer short stories. Charles Stross brings with him a story from the same universe as Saturn's Children and Neptune's Blood, as Freya's descendents are victims of a gamma burst that drives the other workers on a colony ship to prey on and eat their fellow travelers for undamaged feedstock. Neil Gaiman is also present with his wit in showing that zombies may not be the worse thing that can happen... all on one horrible day. The other authors are equally talented with their shared nightmares of flesh-eating horrors.

If you're a fan of zombies of any type, I recommend that you read this book. There is something in here for everyone, and you might find yourself intrigued by an idea you hadn't dreamt of yet.

NOTE: I read this book courtesy of Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A whole lot of stories in one bundle
By Miri
Disclaimer: I won this book in a GoodReads First Read Giveaway. No review was asked in exchange.

This is a hard book to review. I'm not used to reading short stories, and even less used to review them.

1- The Afflicted by Matthew Johnson: This one is different kind of zombie book where, as people grow old, they lose their memory and slowly turn. I won't say more because of spoilers but it delivers and was a great choice for opener. (4*)

2- Dead Song by Jay Wilburn: While well written, it didn't keep my attention. I wanted to skim ahead to see if something 'interesting' would follow. Because of that, I may have missed the punch, if there was one. From what I gathered, it's after the zombie threat is over, but aside from that, I have no idea. A man who is being told what to read narrates the story. We don't know why he is there, or who is speaking to him. (1*)

3- Iphigenia in Aulis by Mike Carey: This one is as different as can be from regular zombie stories. It's told in third person POV from a child, Melanie. The story kept me wondering how it would end. A little jewel I wished was made into a novel or even a novelette. I'd be one of the first to buy it. I can say I was sad it ended so quickly. (5*)

4- Pollution by Don Webb: I can't say I really liked that one. The idea was great but there were too many names, foreign words and explanations for me to appreciate the story. (2*)

5- Becca at the End of the World by Shira Lipkin: This is a real short story, only three pages and a half long. It's about the last hour of a teenager who's been bitten by a zombie. Short, yes, but it delivers. (4*)

6- The Naturalist by Maureen F. McHugh: This one was more of what I had expected of the book, a pure zombie story, albeit different from the usual ones. The protagonist isn't your likeable one, however, it didn't matter. The story was entertaining. (5*)

7- Selected Sources for the Babylonian Plague of the Dead by Alex Dally McFarlane: Told from old tablets found. Makes it sound like it's something real that happened a long time ago. Interesting but not my kind of story. (3*)

8-What Maisie Knew by David Liss: A different twist on zombies. Told in first person POV, we learn about the reanimates (zombies) from a man who ends up hiding one of them in an apartment. I'm not saying why, I'll leave that to the reader. Greatly entertaining. (5*)

9-Rocket Man by Stephen Graham Jones: Zombies and baseball. Sadly, this one didn't do it for me. (1*)

10- The Day the Music Died by Joe McKinney: A few typos such as using the wrong name and the wrong pronoun but aside from that it was a great idea. The protagonist was far from being likeable but it gave the story its own charm. (4*)

11- The Children's Hour by Marge Simon: Maybe it's me but this one just felt as if the author didn't format well... I won't rate it. I don't get poetry.

12- Delice by Holly Newstein: Nice take on voodoo, but nothing memorable. The (too many) sentences in bad French yanked me out of the story instead of making it sound more authentic. I'm not saying it's not the way they speak out there, but for me, Creole (or at least, less French) would have worked better. (3*)

13- Trail of Death by Joanne Anderton: Good story. I liked the idea of the necromancer hunter. However, why did the hunter have an apprentice? I'm guessing it might be part of a bigger story. (4*)

14- The Death and Life of Bob by William Jablonsky: A great example of first POV plural well done. It's also a great example showing people can be narrow minded and believe the stupidest thing over rational explanation. This story will stay with me for a while. (5*)

15- Stemming the Tide by Simon Strantzas: I don't think I really understood this one, and especially the ending. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for it. (2*)

16- Those Beneath the Bog by Jacques L. Condor: Old tales from Inuit living in Northern part of Manitoba about some dead yet living creatures that haunt a bog and its sinkhole. One of the longest stories so far, yet it seems it doesn't tell enough. The author spent a lot of time introducing the characters, which was great; however, it felt as if there was not enough time spent on the deadly creatures. In any other circumstances, I would have liked the story very much, yet in this anthology, people are expecting zombie stories. That part was barely skimmed. I understand it's a short story but so much more could have been added. (3*)

17- What Still Abides by Marie Brennan: Written in a fashion that is closer to poetry than a regular story. I'm sorry to say this was not for me. I didn't finish it. (1*)

18- Jack and Jill by Jonathan Maberry: Start with a kid with cancer. Add a huge storm that threatens to flood the area. If that's not enough add the terror of people being bitten and turned into monsters. Now see the story through the eyes of the kid with cancer. You'll get a small idea of this story. It was filled with emotions. It left me breathless. Well worth the anthology by itself. (5*)

19- In the Dreamtime of Lady Resurrection by Caitlin R. Kiernan: I hate to do this, but if a story of five or six pages doesn't grab my attention after the first and half page, I have to believe it won't be my kind of story. I couldn't finish it. (1*)

20- Rigormarole by Michael A. Arnzen: Another poem. Really, I don't get poems at all...

21- Kitty's Zombie New Year by Carrie Vaughn: I really loved this one. It's not your usual scary zombie story; it's something I could see happening. I also applaud Kitty for keeping her head up her shoulders! (4*)

22- The Gravedigger of Konstan Spring by Genevieve Valentine: Not bad, but nothing exciting either. (3*)

23- Chew by Tamsyn Muir: I liked that one. I think he got what he deserved. However, what shocked me the most is that I was actually happy he did. (4*)

24- 'Til Death Do Us Apart by Shaun Jeffrey: Can't say the story is innovative, but it's well written and enjoyable. (3*)

25- There is no 'E' in Zombi ... by Roxane Gay: I wonder how many people will try that 'recipe'. Once you pass the explanations and recipe, the story that follows is enjoyable, but way too short. Although it's not like much more could be added... (3*)

26- What Once We Feared by Carrie Ryan: Teenagers found themselves in the middle of a zombie outbreak and barricade themselves trying to survive. What I liked about this story is that the teenagers were realistic and not born killers who knew exactly what to do to kill a zombie and did it without remorse. (4*)

27- The Harrowers by Eric Gregory: This was not so much about zombies but about life with zombies. People living in barricaded cities paying clandestine people to get out in the zombie world (and hunt zombies?). A man outside the city possesses a valuable 'weapon' against zombies. (5*)

28- Resurgam by Lisa Mannetti: It had good premises, but it lost me some time soon after the incident at the morgue. Drug, an old journal, half a page of info about small pox...nah, life's too short...Next! (1*)

29- I Waltzed with a Zombie by Ron Goulart: Another one I wished I had skipped. It's not that it's badly written, it's just not my kind of story. (1*)

30- Aftermath by Joy Kennedy-O'Neill: A great tale about the aftermath of a zombie outbreak with a stunning ending. (5*)

31- A Shepherd of the Valley by Maggie Slater: Good story. I wouldn't call it great, maybe a bit predictable, but it was entertaining. (3*)

32- The Day the Saucers Came by Neil Gaiman: I tried, because of the author's popularity, but it's a poem and...did I say it already? I don't get poems.

33- Love, Resurrected by Cat Rambo: Walking dead, yes, zombie? Nah... Still not such a bad read. (3*)

34- Present by Nicole Kornher-Stace: Great story. A mother fights for her child through a zombie outbreak. (4*)

35- The Hunt: Before and the Aftermath by Joe R. Lansdale: Another great story, albeit strange and somewhat disgusting one. No spoiler so I can't tell. You'll have to see for yourself. (5*)

36- Bit Rot by Charles Stross: I like scifi, yet, I don't know why, somehow this one didn't appeal much to me. (3*)

The great stories make this book worth while, however, there were many that left me cold and others I feel I just wasted my time.
Still, if you are craving zombies stories you should find something to quench your thirst in this anthology.

Fairly interesting
By Yzabel
(Note: I got a copy through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.)

Anthologies are always difficult for me to rate—so many different stories, so many authors, and you know you’re bound to find very good pieces, and some you don’t like at all. As far as collections go, this one about zombies was a fairly good one, all in all, that I would rate a 3.5 to 4 stars.

(Also, the time I spend reading a book is usually a good indicator of my interest in it, but in this case, it doesn’t apply. I was reading a couple of other zombie-themed books in the meantime, and I preferred to go slow, rather than eat too much of the same thing at once. pun totally intended, of course.)

My favourites:
- “Iphigenia in Aulis”: the story that spun “The Girl With All The Gifts”, so no surprise here. Reading this “first draft” was interesting, even though I liked the novel better (since it was more developed).
- “The Naturalist”: nasty and vicious undertones here.
- “What Maisie Knew”: a dark and twisted take on what use zombies can be. Somehow it also made me think of “Lolita”, probably because of the way the narrator views himself?
- “The Day the Music Died”: a manager trying to cover up that his money-making rock-star is actually dead. This one had a twisted, funny side that spoke to me. Don’t ask me why.
- “The Death and Life of Bob”: how zombies are not necessarily what you expect… and how dark and narrow-minded humans can be, too.
- “Jack and Jill”: parallels between the zombies and a child who’s sick with cancer and already a “living dead”, in that he knows he probably won’t stay in remission for long. (The fact that *I* actually enjoyed a story with cancer in it is mind-boggling, and speaks of how it managed to make me forget my own fears in that regard.)
- “The Gravedigger of Konstan Spring”: a remote little town where people don’t seem to stay dead for long. Disturbing, strange, quirky, and full of moments when I wondered to which extent the inhabitants would go to keep their gravedigger.
- “Chew”: disturbing not for its take on zombies, but for what actual human beings can do to other human beings.
- “What We Once Feared”: another story bent on revealing how bleak human nature can be, and how dire situations can reveal the worst in people.
- “Aftermath”: the title says it all. How people manage and how life gets back on track slowly after the cure to the zombie-virus has been found. Disturbing aspects about what killing those “zombies” actually meant.
- “Love, Resurrected”: a dark fantasy tale of sorcery, necromancy, and of a woman who has to keep battling even after the flesh has left her bones.
- “Present”: sad and touching in a terrible way.
- “Bit Rot”: when a zombie story collides with science-fiction of the space-travelling kind. The reason behind the “bit rot” was a nice change for me.

OK stories:
- “The Afflicted”: I liked the idea behind it (the elderly ones only falling ill… alas, everybody’s doom to grow old), but it deflated a bit after a while.
- “Becca at the End of the World”: the last hour of a teenager. However, it was a little too short to be as powerful as it could be IMHO.
- “Delice”: not one I’ll remember for long, but nice to read
- “Trail of Dead”: good concept, but I’m not too sure of the apprentice’s part in that (it seemed unfocused).
- “Stemming the Tide”: a little weird, though also poetic in its own way.
- “Those Beneath the Bog”: the curse on a lake, and how old folk tales shouldn’t be discarded. Perhaps a wee bit too long, though.
- “What Still Abides”: very, very weird, in that it tries to emulate Old English grammar. I can’t make up my mind about it, but overall, it still felt strange in a sort of good way for me.
- “In The Dreamtime of Lady Resurrection”: beautiful and dreamy. Not exactly a zombie story, though.
- “‘Til Death Do Us Part”: not exactly original, still enjoyable. A wife comes back from the grave, and her family tries to keep her with them.
- “The Harrowers”: the narrator’s name kind of tiped me about the ending, however it remained interesting.
- “Resurgam”: a good idea that unfortunately ended up in two storylines not meshing up together well. I still liked the Victorian narrative, though.
- “A Shepherd of the Valley”: a bit predictable.
- “The Hunt: Before and The Aftermath”: I wasn’t sure at first where this one was going, but it had interesting insights into revenge in general.

The ones I didn’t like:
- “Dead Song”: I didn’t care for the actor-narrating-story approach. Another one might have worked better, because there was a good idea behind it.
- “Pollution”: I like Japanese culture, but the tropes were too heavy-handed here.
- “Kitty’s Zombie New Year”: forgettable, I didn’t really see the point to this story.
- “Selected Sources for the Babylonian Plague of the Dead”: the narrative style didn’t do it for me at all here. Which is really too bad, because the different setting made for quite interesting grounds.
- “Rocket Man”: I don’t know if it was meant to be comical or not. It didn’t leave much of an impression (but then, I’m not too interested in base-ball for starters, which doesn’t help).
- “I Waltzed with a Zombie”: I couldn’t push myself to get interested in it, I don’t know why. I neither adore nor terribly dislike Hollywood B-movie settings in general, so maybe it was the narrative that didn’t grab me.

Note: A couple of stories are actually in poetic form, which makes them harder to rate (yes, including Neil Gaiman’s one).
