We both love this book!

My 4-year-old and I both love looking at and reading this book. The life cycle of a butterfly is fascinating - and inherently beautiful. The real photographs of stages of the butterfly make this book like a very cool science book in learning but the simplicity of the descriptions make it an easy, enjoyable read.

Beautiful and Educational

A butterfly is one of the most beautiful and fascinating creatures that nature has created, and kids cannot get enough of them. This little book is a photographic documentary of a butterfly's journey from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. The photos are super close up and gorgeous. There are some of the tiny caterpillar struggling to come out of the egg, and some of it coming out its old skin and emerging all striped and ready for action. Most of the time I am all about illustrations and not photographs in picture books, but this is the exception for sure. The story is written from the perspective of the butterfly, and it's pretty much captions to the photos, but it is cute and does a good job of making it feel like a story and not a science book. Mary Ling has a whole series of How They Grow books, and I'm excited to find some of the others. We Give Books has this one listed under ages 0-3, and that's probably right on, but my four year old and seven year old also loved those pictures. Great book.

The book was appropriate for preschoolers - third grade with accurate facts. It was colorful and that's why I purchased it. The book prepare my 81 year old mother for a trip to the Butterfly Pavillion in Los Angeles.

Dr. Lounsberry then describes four characteristics of literary nonfiction and grounds these characteristics in contemporary works.

The five chapters which follow this introduction thoroughly examine the works of five prominent, contemporary nonfiction artists. While critics to date have tended to focus on only one or two of each writer's works, these chapters trace themes across each writer's entire body of work and even project likely future directions, given current artistic trajectories. Also addressed is the role of literary nonfiction in the American literary tradition and how each of the five writers exemplifies a strand of nonfiction narrative. The Art of Fact draws from personal interviews with Gay Talese and John McPhee and includes new interpretations of the works of Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion and Norman Mailer as well as unpublished material from Gay Talese's current book-in-progress. The Art of Fact is a timely call for critical appreciation of the artistry of nonfiction and offers valuable insights to both students and fans of contemporary nonfiction.

BARBARA LOUNSBERRY is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa and a member of the Iowa Humanities Board. She is currently co-editing with Gay Talese an anthology of literary nonfiction for Harper & Row, as well as her own college reader titled The Writer in You: A Writing Process Reader/Rhetoric. Pointless

This book, at least in its second half, is Siddharta with some allies and Jesus having a shootout, hoping from dead world to dead world, with sci-fi-tech weapons. I have no idea why Jesus is just a shadowy figure, the agent of the destroyer of worlds, and Siddharta is a Cyborg, acting on behalf of another outside power which resists the destroyer of worlds but ultimately fails. All this in the language of sci-fi-tech, with lots of physics terms added in, but why is Siddharta's weapon consistently described as Maser (a laser for microwaves) but produces a red ray? To me the relgious refences are pointlessbut of course I come from a christian tradition and the author does not. The religious dualism is certainly nothing new: two outside powers fighting over the world, one of them plotting the destruction of humanity.

A very complex Scifi novel

If our universe is defined by the limits of time since the Big Bang, then what lies beyond that boundary?

To try to answer that question Mitsuse has mixed hard science fiction, heavy on cosmology, and the three of humanities great philosophical traditions. And by mixing, I mean pitting against one another in a battle for supremacy and to save humanity from destruction at the hands of some not so benevolent beings. Ten Billion Days and Hundred Billion Nights also covers a tremendous amount of ground starting at the very beginning of the universe to its final death from entropy.

Without going into too much detail, the novel tells a story of an alien influence on the growth and development of humanity, and how it has manifested itself in different religions and philosophies throughout history. These are the parts of the novel in which Mitsuse is at his best. The writing for each time period resembles the religious and philosophical texts of the time, and the science fiction elements of the plot and battle scenes are worked into the story line seamlessly. But the most compelling part of the story for me though was the insights into Buddhism and that outlook compares with the Christian worldview. At times I didn't fully understand what was going on, and at times the constant descriptions of the characters every thought process got to be a bit tedious; but I'm still amazed at how Mitsuse was able to work so much into one science fiction story and still write something compelling.

Ten Billion Days and Hundred Billion Nights was an ambitious undertaking, and I believe the Mitsuse pretty much pulled it off. It assumes quite a lot of prior knowledge about both physics and metaphysics, and it moves so quickly it can sometimes be confusing, but in my opinion it was well worth the effort to read. I very much enjoyed my first foray into Japanese science fiction.

The best human nervous system text for students.

When I was a medical student in the 1960s, one of my favorite books was Neurological Anatomy by Alf Brodal. Alf's son Per has progressively updated the earlier work and the fourth edition is the best yet. The text is authoritative and up-to-date but easy to read. It is comprehensive but never over-complicated. In my opinion it it is the most accessible reference on the anatomy of the human brain. However, it is not a research oriented book like the the Paxinos and Mai edited text - it seems to me more aimed at high level undergraduate students or practicing physicians. It is a pleasure to read a book that has a single author, who happens also to be a very clear writer. In my opinion, he has taken all the best features of the original Alf Brodal book and rewritten them for a 21st century audience.
The only concern I have in regard to this book is the declining state of undergraduate neuroanatomy. I do not know of many undergraduate courses that would match up to a book with this much detail.

Great book for Intro Neuro students

The Central Nervous System provides an excellent overview of the systems and functions of the CNS. From very detailed neuroanatomical structures, to complex processes involved with all types of functionality, this book presents a superb introduction for any young neuroscience student.
Within the first section, all chapters are devoted to building the brain from the neuron forward. Beginning with basic anatomy and types of cells, the section progresses through the complex processes involved in creating synapses, sending messages through neurons, and the plasticity of neuronal connections. These chapters lay the groundwork for the subsequent chapters and sections by describing in detail the building blocks of the CNS; neurons. The section ends by describing some of the largest parts and systems of the CNS, such as the spinal cord, brain stem, and the flow of blood through the arterial and venous systems.
Section 2 follows with the development of the CNS, from before birth, through adulthood. Per Brodal provides interesting examples of types of dysfunction, disorders, and damage than can occur during any of the developmental stages and how that affects neuronal development and outcome. The section ends with a positive feeling message about how damages from aging or even catastrophic damage in early childhood can be partially mended through plasticity. Section 3 overviews how sensory information of all types is converted through the CNS into neuronal reactions. By covering the 5 senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch), they set up a framework for the following section dealing with motor systems. In particular, the chapter devoted to systems, features, and treatments associated with pain are extremely interesting.
Section 4 which covers the motor system and movements, begins by explaining how the motor system works interdependently with others systems, a seamless transition from the previous section describing the process of sensory input. By beginning with functions of motoneurons, muscles, and reflexes, the section sets up the sequential transition between peripheral systems, pathways of the motor system, and finally to the brain structures responsible for processing information into actions. The section flows through these chapters covering the spinal pathways, the basal ganglia, the cerebellum, and ending with the functions of these regions in eye movements. Diseases that affect these regions and function are also described and related to real people, which makes the reader feel that the knowledge is more tangible and applicable to their world.
Section 5 includes detailed descriptions of the cranial nerves, which again has a flawless transition from brain regions controlling eye movement from the previous section to functions of reticular formation, consciousness, sleep, and the functioning processes of the cranial nerves. Sections 6, 7, and 8 cover the autonomic nervous system, limbic structures, and the cerebral cortex respectively. As very complicated structures and functions, this introductory text provides general organization, anatomical features, and principal functionality of each of the systems. For example, Section 6 describes the neurotransmitters involved in the autonomic nervous system as well as the structure, function, and connections associated wit the hypothalamus and endocrine system. Section 7 describes how the amygdala, basal forebrain, and hippocampus form functional roles in regulating emotions, memories, and aspects of learning. Section 8, the final section and endpoint of our journey through the CNS, sums together the knowledge about each section through the nervous system into the general and more complete functionality of our brain. Here, the organization and connections of the cerebral cortex are outlined and the functions of each are discussed. Additionally, they discuss aspects of functional differences between the hemispheres, such as speech and language areas, as well as sex differences found between men and women when investigating the structure of the cerebral cortex.
Overall this book is well written and easy to read, keeping the attention of readers with interesting examples spread throughout the text of disorders and how they affect functioning. By starting with the basic descriptions of the neuron, moving through all subsequent systems, and eventually discussing how all these working parts come together to build a conscious being with innumerable abilities, Per Brodal has created a Central Nervous System journey, through which a student can easily read and learn while enjoying the ride.

The Central Nervous System compiles the principles of brain structures in a basic, clear, and concrete way. While making the text easy to read and easy to understand, the author does not compromise content.
In this fourth edition, the book covers a wide range of explanations of neurobiology, including psychological and clinical research and the structure of the peripheral pathways. One of the main goals of the book is to generate knowledge by being more intelligible rather than to overload the reader with descriptive facts that would require more memorization.
The book divides its 34 chapters in 8 sections. Each part has an overview that contains general information about what is to come; since the beginning engages the reader explaining from a general point of view the principles of the nervous system (i.e. the neuron and their processes). Then, it takes the lector by hand to the next's chapters, including the description of synaptic function and also development of structural and functional features that differentiate cells. The book provides an explanation of the different pathways formed in the nervous system and describes rewiring process of structure and function in plasticity. Throughout the chapters, the brain structures are related with associated diseases. That provides clarity, helping the reader to make clinical relationships with different brain structures and behavior. It covers aging, the basic properties of sensory receptors (including pain and clinical disturbances of the somatosensory system). For the sake of completeness the next chapters cover the hypothalamus, cranial nerves, the autonomic nervous system and the cerebral cortex.
The photos, images and drawings presented in the book are descriptive and clear; they are very helpful supporting the information that is presented in text.
This volume is a basic resource for professionals interesting in the nervous system; for neuroscience students, psychiatrist as well as clinicians.
The text can be used as a tool for studying and understanding the basic principles of the nervous system. It surprises me the amount of subjects that the book covers; all subjects are explained in a friendly way that even professionals with not medical background can understand and get involved with. One of my favorite characteristics of the book is that there seems to be a flow between chapters that makes information more clear and precise from the beginning to the end. This work is an excellent resource for learning the marvels of the central nervous system and for preparing the reader with the principles needed for further studies. In this sequel to the animal fantasy Redwall (1987), and its prequel, Mossflower , (1988, both Philomel), Slagar the Cruel, the fox with a twisted mind, repays the hospitality of his hosts, the goodhearted animals of Redwall Abbey, by kidnapping their children. Led by the young mouse Mattimeo (son of the warrior Matthias, hero of Redwall ), the children befriend their fellow captives Auma Badger and Jube Hedgehog as they march toward slavery in the underground rat kingdom of Malkarris. Meanwhile, Matthias leads a rescue mission that joins forces with the fathers of Auma and Jube, and despite brushes with defeat, their camaraderie and good humor never fail. ln a third strand of action, the animals left at Redwall Abbey are besieged by villainous crows. While the book is long and its cast large, the twists of plot and quick changes of scene sweep readers along a swift narrative current. Some readers, however, will question the unabashed celebration of a warrior code, the sentimental acceptance of battle deaths, and the predictable scoundrels. The characters, compared with those in Wind in the Willows , Watership Down , and the picture books of Beatrix Potter, are bland, remaining far too human to become that mythic hybrid of human and animal. THIS IS A DEFINITE READ

"One day you will weild the sword my son but it will not make you a warrior." This is from the book Mattimeo by Brian Jacques. If you don't like adventure, if you don't like action, if you like boring charecters, ........then don't read the book because Mattimeo is loaded with Adventure, action, and great and funny charecters. Mattimeo is about a young mouse named Mattimeo whose father, Matthis, is the Redwall Warrior and mattimeo has to grow up to become one. Through his life Mattime grows up just like his father ( a little michief maker) he always gets in to fights, trouble, and other things like that. Well one day he and some of the other young Animals from redwall get captured by a Cunning fox Slagar the Cruel and are put on a slave trial destined to a place called Malkris where they will work as slaves for the rest of their lives. The Animals at Redwall send out a search party. On their way to find their children they make some new friends with other animals whose Children have beeen taken by Slagar, Plus they meet up with some with some old friends. While they are gone a Crow named General Ironby attacks the Redwall Abbey. If you thought the plot sounded good, then try reading the book. I think the strengths were everything but one thing. The weaknesses are that one thing. I don't think that in each chapter there should be a different place each time. The style of the author was funny, so funny that sometimes it makes you laugh out loud; adventurous so that you feel like you're fighting in the battle, cliffhangers that just make you want to read on, and mystery. Other books in the Readwall series are, Martin the Warrior, Mossflower, Redwall, Perls of Lutra, The long Patrol, and of course Mattimeo. Will Mattimeo ever grow up to become a warrior and weild the sword of his father? To find out you must read the book.

Best book in the series

People say these books are only for younger children but I'm still entertained by them at age 19. Mattimeo has always been my favorite Redwall book. I recently started re-reading it and all the memories came flooding back. This book has it all. The best Heroes (Mathias, Basil, Orlando), the best villians (Slagar and the slavers, Stonefleck, General Ironbeak), and it is filled with riddles. A masterpiece of an adventure book. Id recommend it to anyone.

Dust In The Wind

Even though Brian Jacques' books are considered to be for children, I find that even as a teenager I can still enjoy the stories and characters that are apart of Redwall. I've been hooked to the series since 6th grade when I had to read REDWALL for a book reading compeitition. But of all the novels, I've always loved Mattimeo the most. The rich story lines, the family ties between Matthias and his son are very real, even though they are fictional mice in a fantasy book. So for the past five years I've been collecting all his novels, reading them over and over, getting all the hardcover editions for the wonderful illustrations. Though it is Mattimeo which I read the most, and the song Dust In The Wind (I can't remember the artist) is a wonderful theme song for this novel. Everytime I hear it, I close my eyes and can imagine the characters, their strengths, weaknesses, and this plight for good over evil. In 7th grade I wrote a poem about Slagar The Cruel (the fox in the novel) and won a poetry contest with it. I've read many classics over the years, from Dickens to Dumas, but it is Brian Jacques' novels that stick in my mind the most.

Hammes is a career Marine Corps officer, and with this selection, he argues that the U.S. has adapted poorly in response to the new generation of guerrilla warfare. Fourth-generation warfare, as Hammes calls it, is what American forces encounter in Iraq and Afghanistan and Israelis find in Palestine, and it is the way of the future: guerrilla warfare characterized by political acumen and patience, using communications networks and strategic strikes to demoralize and exhaust conventionally superior militaries. For many military strategists, including those presently running the Defense Department, this new world order amounts to a call to newfangled technological arms, but for Hammes, smart bombs and spy drones are not the answer. About the Author
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a career Marine, Thomas Hammes has spent most of his twenty-eight years serving in infantry and intelligence assignments. Colonel Hammes is considered by many in the defense community as the foremost expert in insurgent warfare. He has written numerous articles on defense issues and has appeared on PBS News Hour and other cable and network broadcasts. He is a senior military fellow at the National Defense University. He lives with his family in northern Virginia.

Modern warfare is every bit as complex as modern life -- and getting moreso every day

A very interesting account of the history of war and how war has evolved. It puts in context the motives and intents of terrorists that affect so much of the modern world. Quite important to understand this in coming to decisions on how to respond to terrorism, because if you don't know what they are trying to accomplish you cannot effectively thwart them. I really appreciated this viewpoint as they always seemed like angry but ineffectual criminals, but now I better see what their aim is so I can choose actions that help oppose them.

A Need Type of Training to Help Military Leaders to Succeed

USMC Colonel Hammes provides a general education about fourth-generation warfare (4GW) and its implications for our future. Hammes describes this form of guerrilla warfare and devotes chapters to modern experiences. He analyzes the current situation and gives a prognosis for the future.

I found the best chapters on historical 4GW the ones on Mao in China and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, although all the chapters were unique and instructive. In both of these instances, guerrilla wars were run by practical leaders, not idealists as they projected themselves. They were simply ambitious and disciplined leaders using 4WG tactics over a long time horizon to gain the prize - ultimate political power.

Once in power, 4GW leaders renege on promises made to followers and populations that supported them at great risk. The degree of sacrifice demanded by such leaders versus our own politicians distinguishes them. Think about how many people work for a presidential campaign full-time based on the promise of a federal job and the relatively small percentage that actually get the promised federal job. Guerrilla leaders are no different in that regard except their followers often risked their lives fighting for them. Despite all the rhetoric, successful 4GW campaigns are fought over years by ambitious practical leaders.

4GW succeeds best against bureaucratic political-military organizations that throw great resources at winning non-strategic victories with short-term planning horizons. For example, the U.S. could theoretically win a battle or some territory and declare victory for local press within the U.S. This, however, does not impress enemies of the U.S. or make them lose their will to fight. That's an example of the threat.

Colonel Hammes demonstrates that technological innovation tends to favor guerrilla fighters more than conventionally organized and heavily resourced military hierarchies. This is almost counterintuitive because one naturally understands how technology will favor oneself, but we have to work very hard at understanding the enemy and how the enemy sees things. According to Hammes, we are not going to find salvation in technological advancement, important as it is. We're must take a lot of time to develop human resources. We must fight the enemy strategically as long as it takes and forget about using the military to win reelection. 4GW plays out over many years, perhaps decades.

The Sling and the Stone is a revolutionary treatise on warfare. It has already influenced our next generation of military leaders. Hammes inspired a new cadre of military intellectuals. There will be more books to build on Hammes' concepts, and military courses with updated training and enlightened instructors.

We must change the game which is currently based on using ever-increasing sums of public funds to finance weapon systems that power political campaigns and promise lucrative retirement of top-ranking officers, according to the author. We have to change, adapt, and become flexible and smarter.

Helps us enjoy the Bible the way she does

I've read a lot of books about Bible study written by experts--people who love to teach the Bible. But this book is clearly about someone who first loves the Bible, and then helps us love it more by what she teaches. I'm almost shocked at the blessings I received in every chapter. Chapter 11 on the application of God's Word to our lives has meant the most. Each chapter is accessible, real and practical. I don't think The Bible Study Handbook is as much about how to study the Bible as it is how to enjoy God's Word so that we are changed.

Great Resource: very readable, understandable, and practical

The Bible Study Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to an Essential Practice

I teach classes on how to study the Bible, so I'm always interested in reviewing tools and helps that might facilitate my teaching and communicate methods for effectively understanding the holy Scriptures. Consequently, it was with great excitement that I got my hands on Lindsay Olesberg's The Bible Study Handbook.

I took my first inductive Bible study class in 1988 and I have been collecting resources as well as taking additional how-to-study-the-Bible classes ever since. Needless to say, I have a nice collection of resources and methods at my disposal. It is with this awareness that I am confident to report that The Bible Study Handbook ranks among the highest rated of my resources for teaching the inductive methods of study. I will share my reasons.

Technical Specifics

The book weighs in just over two hundred fifty pages, not exhaustive, but it does stand up to its claim of being comprehensive. These pages are broken into three primary sections--Part 1: Foundations, Part 2: Building Blocks, and Part 3: Tool Box. In Foundations, Olesberg shares some of the influences and philosophy behind her passion and belief in the process of inductive Bible study. The next section of the book moves into the Building Blocks of inductive study method. Here, Olesberg introduces and teaches basic hermeneutical tools needed for accurate and effective interpretation of the Scriptures. Some of the major points in Building Blocks include contextual respect and understanding, which includes authorship (who wrote it, to whom was it written, why was it written) and narrative details (genre, cultural influences, socio-political, and economic circumstances to name a few). Moving to Part 3: Tool Box, is where Olesberg outlines helpful resources and practices necessary for effective Bible study.

The book is well annotated with a number of illustrations, tables, and graphs; all of these are very nice additions, especially for visual learners. Additionally, there is a collection of summary helps included in the appendices at the end of the book.

Things I really like

As I mentioned earlier in my review, I have been practicing and teaching inductive Bible study for many years. I can say with confidence that, for most people, Bible study is not easy and good Bible study is not quick. Inductive Bible study takes time, is detail oriented, requires good resources, and a very systematic approach. It is to these ends that I really appreciated the way that Lindsey Olesberg presented her methods and approach to Bible study. Her writing was reader friendly and her passion for Bible study was evident, which often becomes contagious for the reader. I also found an appreciation for the interactive exercises included at the end of each chapter. I think Olesberg made a practiced effort to include all of the primary learning styles in her handbook; at least as much as an author can accomplish this in a written form.

Final Thoughts

I don't have any serious criticism for The Bible Study Handbook. I wish the resources section in the appendices would have been a little more comprehensive, but some of that detail is covered in the Tool Box section of the book. I am always grateful for the wonderful resources that InterVarsity Press brings to the Christian community and I believe this contribution from Lindsey Olesberg is another great gift. I will be including it in my recommended resources to my students as well as returning to it again and again for my own benefit.

Read this book and embrace the joy of Inductive Bible Study!

I was so excited to hear that Lindsey Olesberg had written a book on Inductive Bible Study especially since I knew that she was in charge of the Bible expositions at Urbana and the Lausanne congress. These have been two of the most important conferences in the last century related to world evangelization. Reading this book made me realize why they had chosen her for this task. Lindsey absolutely loves the Bible and has dedicated her life to help university students discover the riches of God's word. The book is full of practical wisdom on how to dig deeper into the Bible. I'm currently teaching the Bible several times a week to youth and young adults and I'm so thankful that Lindsey has gifted me with this absolute treasure.

If the Bible is God's word then we must labor at finding the best way to understand it. Many great scholars agree that Inductive Bible Study is probably the most effective, rewarding and enjoyable ways to study the Bible. Since Lindsey Olesberg is one of the leading inductive Bible Study trainers of our generation I highly recommend that you get this book.
