About the Author
Dr. John Sailhamer has served on the translation committees for two versions of the Book of Genesis. He holds a Ph.D. in Semitics from UCLA and a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary. Dr. Sailhamer has taught at Bethel Seminary and Philadelphia College of Bible, and has served as professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He was scholar in residence at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and concurrently professor of Old Testament at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. Most recently, he has taught Old Testament and Hebrew at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and then at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Southern California campus in Brea. He is the author of over a dozen books, the last being the Meaning of the Pentateuch.

You Don't Have to Choose Between AIG and RTB: There's a Better Way

Hello,

Others have already done a fine job summarizing Sailhamer's thesis, so I won't rehash that too much here. What I want to focus on instead is the virtue of this book, **if its thesis is true.** So if you order this (which I highly recommend) and read it (yes, books that you order also have to be read and not just put in piles or on shelves), please read it carefully, but also with an awareness of the context in which we find ourselves today:

1. A broad scientific consensus that some form of macro evolution is true.
2. A growing number of "maverick" scientists (Christian and non-Christian) who are calling into question that consensus.
3. Christian "cottage industries" with vested interest in maintaining and "selling" their views. Here I am speaking primarily of two camps: The Young-Earth Creationist Camp represented by Answers in Genesis. And Old-Earth Day-Age Creationists represented by Reasons to Believe.
4. You can pretty much draw a line in the sand between these two camps. It seems to me that Ken Ham and AIG have cornered the market on home-schoolers and many others in the church who are convinced that a literal 7-day creation of the universe is so obviously the Biblical view that no other Christian hypothesis is going to get a fair hearing.
5. Then there are those who just know they can't put their head in the sand and pretend that the science doesn't say what it seems to be saying. Enter the various Old-Earth readings of scripture and their attempt to turn the word "day" in Genesis 1 into entire eons.

So how is Sailhamer's book a "termtium quid" worthy of our consideration? Let me list the ways:

1. You no longer have to choose between science and the Bible. You can affirm that God literally created in seven calendar days while simultaneously holding for an earth that is possibly billions of years old and an even older universe.
2. You can affirm with the young-earther that a "day" in Genesis 1 is just a "day," not an entire "age."
3. You can affirm with the old-earther that "in the beginning" God created the entire universe and that this likely took place some 14 billion years ago according to present big-bang cosmology.
4. You can be "open-but-cautious" to macro-evolutionary theory, but are probably better off rejecting it on scientific rather than biblical grounds. In other words, you can take an aposteriori approach rather than an apriori approach, which is far more satisfying. In yet other words, if the theory of evolution that is being taught in our schools is wrong, it's wrong because first and foremost it's bad science and not only bad theology. Alternatively, if the best scientific evidence suggests the probability of macro-evolution, then the Bible can still accommodate this up to a point. Sailhamer would say that it all happened in that indeterminate time called "the beginning."
5. But...and this is a huge but....Genesis does affirm that man is a special creation of God that did not "evolve" organically from a biological ancestor. Happily, this accords with the scientific record as well, where homo sapiens sapiens seems to rather "suddenly" appear on the scene with no known predecessor.

Finally, I want to mention AIG's critique of Genesis Unbound, which you may or not be aware of. It's called "Unbinding the Rules" and you can easily find that with a search engine.

Unfortunately it is a very one-sided misrepresentation of Sailhamer's thesis which is frankly unworthy of the name "Christian." I invite you to read my personal point-by-point refutation of AIG's critique here at my blog. You can find that by searching for Fallibility and my article entitled "A Rebuttal of AIG's Critique of Genesis Unbound."

Now I'm not saying everything in Genesis Unbound is Gospel. I'm just saying that Sailhamer's thesis deserves a fair hearing and that **if true** a number of contemporary problematics are easily resolved. So please read the book with an open mind and don't take AIG's take on it as Gospel. (Remember, AIG has its own self-interest in mind and that is to keep the church dependent upon its materials for its view of creation).

As for me and my house (educated thinkers who are also Christian), we've found in Sailhamer's book a great talking piece with our atheist and unbelieving friends that doesn't go the way of Ken Ham as in his recent (Feb, 2014) debate with Bill Nye the Science Guy (which by most accounts went poorly for Ham).

Here is my one big critique: This book is crying out for an index, which is why I'm giving 4 rather than 5 stars. Perhaps in a future edition?

Genesis Unbound for a college geology major and a practicing physician

I was raised in a young earth, 7 day creation church and home, went on to state university and got a degree in geology. As you might imagine, the evolutionary aspects of modern geology bothered me. Over the years I read everything I could to help me reconcile things. I have always "known" that God did create all things, but it never made sense to me that "there was evening and morning, day 1" but the sun was not "created" until day 4. Hugh Ross got my attention with his views but they never satisfied as I felt he was trying to make the bible fit science. Then John Sailhammer came along with his "Genesis Unbound." For the first time I felt that someone really understood and explained what the bible actually said and not what we wanted it to say, and did it in a non-judgmental manner allowing other viewpoints to exist without ridiculing them. To understand the idea that Genesis 1:1 was creation and not the title of the chapter, and then the assigning of function, meaning and purpose of creation during those 6 creative days was a substantial relief to me. I finally found an answer that satisfied my desire to stay faithful to the bible and to lend credence to what true science discovered. Sailhammer also points out that the original Hebrew wording does not specify either a young or old earth, it just doesn't address time. After geology, I went on to study medicine and now, decades later-- after college that is , practicing ER medicine. I am reading Sailhammer's book again to further cement his explanations/interpretations into my brain to better understand them. It's even better the second time around! This book, to me, makes the most sense. The young earth creationists that insist that if you hold to any other view then you are committing heresy is ridiculous, and divisive at best. This book satisfies the scientist in me and the very, very amateur theologian in me quite nicely. You will come away from this feeling as though you held true to God's word, but with a realization that you let God's word speak for itself, and not how we want it to sound in the 21st century with evolutionists deriding creationists for being emotionally attached to "myth." True science never disagrees with God, and His word doesn't either. So this is a very nice fusion of the true facts of science and the Bible. Sailhammer actually does not address the science of it all, but true science, the facts anyway, are what they are. It is the conclusions as to why and how the facts came to be where we run into crazy ideas. This book is definitely worth the time and money. Get it, and get a second copy if you want others to read it too, don't want to lose your copy!

Fantastic book. Easy read on a complex thought. I have read much on this topic and I believe that Hebrew scholars, and those who love the context of the land and the people of Israel, tend to be the most thorough and convincing on this discussion. Obviously there is much debate - even among Christian theologians - about this topic and I love the clear and precise way that Sailhamer presents his position. He has also presented much history to support what may appear to many as a new idea, yet in fact is not new at all.

Book Delivers as Promised

I am a Wharton MBA graduate who will be teaching a survey course on business on the MBA level. To do this, I researched far and wide for the best book I could find to serve as a textbook and this beats all others hands-down. Thumbs up. It is comprehensive, current, well-written, and delivers the skills taught in America's top business schools in a highly reader-friendly manner. Every "nook and cranny" of business is covered. Day 10 with its Minicourses closes the loop. Certainly, it is not a substitute for the in-depth manner by which these principles, concepts, theories, practices would be garnered by taking numerous courses needed to earn an MBA degree. It is not a substitute for earning an MBA degree. However, it will serve as a valuable source of material upon which to learn to some depth of the various business disciplines as you move into or early-on through earning an MBA degree. To serve you well post-degree as a reference relative a comprehensive view of business. Enabling one to go out into the business world with an interdisciplinary, synthesized knowledge of business' various disciplines upon which to draw upon and be effective, successful. I buy a lot of books on business and sadly, most of the books I get usually don't give me any real information. The Ten Day MBA is different. I never got my MBA and have been running a business for the past two years. I read this book, divided into 10 chapters of the most basic information you need to know about business and all the sudden everything became clear. If you run a business or are thinking of starting a business, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED TO READ!!! It will give you EXACTLY the information you've been missing. This is the MBA program in 10 day book form

After receiving my MBA, I looked for a book that best summarized the MBA knowledge base that I could use as a resource to review periodically to keep infrequently used knowledge fresh. This is the book. I read the 3rd addition and now read the 4th edition and will keep reading it as a best one stop shop for an MBA in one book. It is well written, concise and covers everything I covered in my MBA program. I read it in 8 days. 10 should not be a problem even if somewhat busy.

I also recommend this book for those considering a MBA. If this book doesn't interest you then you should really consider whether you want to get an MBA or pursue another path in furthering your career.

About the Author

Kevin Greene is Reader in Archaeology at the University of Newcastle. He has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate and continuing education levels. He has also published many books and articles on his research into Roman ceramics, economics and technology.

Tom Moore is Lecturer in Archaeology at Durham University. He has been a key member of a variety of field projects in Britain and Europe and worked for two years in contract archaeology for Cotsworld Archaeology.

Dry, barely chronological, mind-numbingly boring

This book contains lots of information and many examples. However, it is a VERY dry read, and requires much sorting of the wheat from the chaff. Chapters seem to jump about willy-nilly, with a barely tangible thread connecting each section. I would not recommend this book to anyone, least of all someone who is looking for an interesting text on archaeological principles.

Very informative, but it is very loaded down with technical jargon which makes it rather dry. Other that the product was shipped in a timely fashion and in good condition.

True British recipes

My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because some typical British ingredients aren't explained. I had to look them up on the internet to see if I could substitute. For example, some recipes call for "strong flour", or "caster sugar". Strong flour is just bread flour which has higher gluten content, but my understanding is that European flours have an even higher gluten content than American, so there may be some minor textural differences in some of the breads. Caster sugar can be made by whizzing regular granulated sugar in a blender so it is finer grained, but not powdered. Unrefined caster sugar has me scratching my head though. Mixed dried fruit is another and while I know what dried fruit is, I am not sure what fruits in what proportions are included. Another more illusive ingredient is "mixed spice" and I am not sure exactly what spices are used in what proportions.

Baking temperatures are given in Celsius and gas mark, but a table of UK and US weights and measures is given in the back of the book which includes Fahrenheit equivalents.

All those problems can be solved by doing a little online research, but the one ingredient that can't be exactly substituted for is fresh yeast. Fresh compressed yeast is available in VERY few locations and no amount of dried yeast is given as a substitute. It will take some experimenting to work out the correct amount. Another ingredient, fresh game, is not readily available in the US and I'm not sure how available it is in the UK, however, the title of the book is Royal Teas, so I suspect the Queen has her own game hunting reserves that supply this.

Measurements are metric, but recipes have the English measurement equivalent which is still used alongside the metric in the UK and the only measurements we use in the US. A table of metric and English measurement equivalents is given in the appendix as well. British baking and cooking terminology is used such as "Once the dough has doubled in size it needs knocking back". In the US, we'd say "punch it down". For anyone who cooks, none of this should be a problem.

I would certainly recommend this book for the adventurous cook, but those who are not experienced may find it a challenge given the unavailability of certain ingredients mentioned earlier.

A little private affectation never hurt anyone...

After buying a recipe book for the ship Queen Elizabeth 2nd, I scouted about and found this and it's what one needs to feel they are 'with it'. I'm a coffee man. So when I boil water, rinse and scald the tea pot and proceed to make a cup'a...I make a pot and have a seat some where where I don't see dishes waiting to be washed. That's my idea of High Tea. And this book will provide the recipes.
